All Time Lisahally XI : Shaun Whoriskey

It has been suggested that Shaun Whoriskey holds the record for most appearances for Lisahally and indeed, that may well be true. The strong centre back is part of the Whoriskey dynasty that has contributed so much to Lisahally over the years. Here is what he said:

"
I didn’t consider young players like Mark Duffy , Petie Doherty  and most of the players playing at the minute.

"They will be considered some of the best players in years to come.

"I’ve probably forgotten to put a few players in the team who are maybe as good as some of the players mentioned."

Lisahally all-time 11.
  1. GK  Nial Walker.  Nial only played for a couple of seasons but he was very solid and hardly put a foot wrong.
  2. RB  Sean Hargan.  Sean was quick, strong and maybe the best header of a ball that I’ve seen play for Lisahally.
  3. LB  Decky Brown.  Decky could have played at a higher level.  He has always been a great defender with his biggest strength being his composure on the ball.  He will bring a ball down on his chest that most will head clear.
  4. CB  Libby Mullan.  He’s the best defender that I’ve seen play for Lisahally.  He had excellent ability on the ball and scored loads of goals.
  5. CB  David Ogilby.  David played mainly up front for Lisahally but when he played at the back you could see that he was a class above the rest.
  6. RW  Colin Moran.  Colin was lightning quick which defenders found hard to handle.  He maybe could have played at a higher level but retired early.
  7. LW  Donovan Collins.  Donovan only played a few seasons but he was the best left winger that I’ve seen play for Lisahally.  He was quick and skilful and with the ability to score plenty of goals.  It’s a shame that he didn’t play much more games for Lisahally.
  8. CM  Topher Whoriskey.  I’m biased but he’s the best player that I’ve seen play for Lisahally.  He was hard in the tackle and had great composure on the ball.  He could have played for any team in the D & D but was very loyal to Lisahally.
  9. CM  Noel O’Donnell.  Noel has always been a class or 3 above the rest of us boys.  He probably has the most natural ability of any player to come out of Strathfoyle.  He can do things with a ball that the rest of us can only dream of.
  10. CF  Paul Lowry.  Noggs is another who’s lightning quick. He was outstanding for the few years that he played with Lisahally.  He’s a nightmare to mark as he’s so quick and skilful.  He probably should have scored more goals but he still scored plenty and created many of the chances himself.
  11. CF  Diesel Brown.  Chris will go down as one of the best players ever to play for Lisahally.  He was a quick and skilful striker who scored loads of goal.  Like Noel he also must be one of the most natural footballers to come out of Strathfoyle

Sub 1.  Spike Doherty.  Spike is very underrated.  He’s a great shot stopper and is great with his feet for a keeper.  Without Spike we wouldn’t have won the 2 cups in recent years.
Sub 2.  Rory Kirk.  Like Spike without the fight and heart of Rory we wouldn’t have won the cups over the last few yrs.
Sub 3.  Noel Coyle.  Coyle has always been a very good footballer with an excellent range of passing.  He doesn’t get the credit that he deserves.
Sub 4.  Mark Tracey.  Mark is another defender who was very composed at the back.  He could also play midfield and has definitely been one our best players of the years.
Sub 5.  Jai White.  Jai is one of the best defenders to have played for Lisahally.  He could have played at a higher level and still could.

Rory's Report: Lisahally 3 - 0 Celtic Swifts

Lisahally 3 - Celtic Swifts 0
by Rory Kirk on Sunday, 20 November 2011 at 19:02.

Well hello sports fans and what a good day for Lisahally down in the Stra Arena earlier as they recorded a fine victory and gained a massive three points. With the November heatwave continuing it was a fine morning down at our riverside location and the Beechwood venue was in some nick and credit must go to our groundsmen for preparing such a surface. This morning I also got the shock of my life when Decky Brown was one of the first players to arrive in changing rooms, whatever Jai told him has certainly worked as he was back to his best today and had a great game - nice to see him sober.

Today also seen the return of the new over 40s cult hero Fergie from his hibernation and he once again looks older. As the supporters started to gather there was a high level of anticipation on what Lisah' would show up. Half the supporters were also drunk as skunks due to the Carlsberg promotion in Molins last night and it will be a noisy night down in the club tonight as they celebrate today's victory. Rumour has it 3 pound Danny is going to sing a wee Gareth Brooks number to his number one wag, weren't those oranges at half time lovely today again?

I last seen the bag of oranges flying over the quarry at a fast rate, last boy to go over the quarry like that landed in a washing machine! Who was it? With the three pounds gathered and the usual "change the rigs twice" trick carried out it was time for warm ups and pre-match talks from our elder statesmen to rouse the wee doggs into battle. Most players looked fresh but a few look tired due to their late night antics of ringing there boyfriends to wish them goodnight (Aidy). There were a few absentees today which included recently engaged birthday boy Emmett "Shuh", "Fernando" Doherty injured and Micky Cooke and Jonny Hume who had to attend a hair dressing convention in Belfast. These boys after today will find it hard to break back into the team as competition for places is now heating up and no one is safe.

Returning however to the squad today was the prodigal son Kieran Mc Glinchey and he had the nerve to take Lisah' legend Shaun "one gear" Whoriskey's seat - they must have taught him no manners at Downeys at all. It was however great to see him back and he had a great game and has the pace at the back to help out auld "one gear" Whoriskey. Today also seen the debut of the wee hobbit Robbie Hume and he is another great addition to squad. It was great to see so many young wee doggs playing together as a team. Celtic Swifts had a much more youthful team out today than last time and to be fair gave Lisah' a good game.

First half started at lightning pace with end to end action. The wee doggs looked well up for it and I could sense early on that a victory was on the cards today. The breakthrough came from ace marksman Barry Murray after a goalmouth scramble and he flicked it home with ease. The goal will hopefully erase all memories of the well documented Ronnie Rozenthal moment yesterday with "Egahally FC". With Shaun, J.R, Decky and Judas keeping it tight and simple at the back and Big Joe "Gomes" in nets, Lisah' were in full control. The midfield partnership of Jai and Mc Shan' were invincible in centre of the park and the two Sugar poster boys of Duffs and Aidy bombing the wings it was just a matter of time until we hit the second.

The second goal was worth the £5 entrance fee when the wee new houses man Robbie Hume sent his 25 yard free kick curling around the wall and into the bottom left hand corner to make it two nil and a great debut goal. Lisah' were now moving through the gears, the sidelines were in love with the team again and even "Sticks" and the salmon Mc Al made a surprise appearance. How many sidelines would provide support like it, roll on The Longfield and Spike's Teenage Kicks. Although in control, Lisah' did not add to the scoreline before half time and the only other highlight was captain Jai sending the ref flying for getting in his way. With the halftime whistle blown it was like ten o'clock down in Centra's belly counter on DLA day with the fight for those delicious oranges on the sideline. Not much talking was required from Stroker and Wee Bull as the team was doing exactly as asked so we all went a walk around the Otters Bank and then a game of Hunts up in the new houses until the second half started. The half time question was,

•What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and grey when it's used up?

The second half got under way and whatever the Swifts men were drinking at half time seemed to work as the looked a better team second half and started to get into game. Lisahally started to sit back and soak up the pressure and Swifts slipped an extra man into midfield. It was now Lisahally's turn to experience some pressure. We went quiet and started to panic a wee bit at the back but with Big Joe "Gomes-tripod-white Drogba in nets he kept Lisahally in it with a fine display of goal keeping. A great prospect for future years. His brother big JR was last night seen with Jai and Joe up at six mass singing with Father Colhoun and JR's prayers were answered when he recieved a nasty head injury and ended up resembling something out of Aliens - just need Sigourney Weaver to hunt him down now.

However the power of prayer helped him - me and him said a wee rosary going off the pitch with Jai and big Joe singing the old rugged cross in the background. This sub seen the return of Stroker on the playing front and he used his experience to quell the Celtic storm. Next sub was the nephew of Hard Baps, big John Marshall and he marked it with scoring his first goal in Lisahally colours with a diving header that hit his shoulder and ended up in the back of the net - a real collector's item and a goal he will cherish. I should also mention that wee Duffs put in a pinpoint cross for the goal before I come to the good part.

With the game now over as a contest Lisah started to regain control again and it should really have been four nil but for a potential miss of the season from wee Duffs - his sister Bronagh would have scored it. With the "Fields of Athenry" now ringing around the arena followed by a rendition of that old classic "Who Let the Doggs Out", the game came to a close and the supporters headed back into Beirut happy and looking forward to their Sunday dinners and free pints of carlsberg.

This was a massive three points for Lisahally as it was our first home win in league and with league leaders 3 flowers coming to Strathganistan next Sunday we needed a good head of steam before taking on the cream buns from Coshquin. There were happy scenes in the changing rooms after game and it was good to see the wee doggs back barking and enjoying themselves in the showers with eachother. This today was also record cap holder "one gear" Shaun "Féin"'s last game as hopefully very shortly Danielle produces the next generation of Stra Whoriskey footballer and he wont be allowed out anymore to play.

Topher also said if its a boy that he is buying everyone connnected with Lisah' a pint. All the best Shaun and enjoy your retirement and welcome to the real world come birth. Anyway I must go as I can hear the 'Pool fans outside celebrating winning the league again and "Strictly" is nearly on. Great performance today from all players and management and backroom staff including Evergreen Hargan who apparently needs a new kit man - application forms available from Maccers. Keep on barking and we will keep on supporting and helping build a potential team of league winners. Woof Woof, The Big Dogg

Judas turned Prodigal Son: Kieran McGlinchey's Story

McGlinchey with TOTH

Kieran McGlinchey endured a torrent of abuse from Lisahally fans when he made the decision to sign for Downeys at the beginning of the 2010/2011 season. Labelled "Judas" and shunned by the Strathfoyle community, McGlinchey missed out on what proved to be the most successful season in the Strathfoyle club's history. There had been rumours circulating throughout Strathfoyle that McGlinchey was considering signing for his local club and last week, manager Noel O'Donnell confirmed the transfer.

Speaking to the Listener, McGlinchey exhuded the enthusiasm of a footballer who simply wants to play:

"Downeys were going down hill and I was asked to join Top of the Hill Celtic, so at the time this seemed like a good decision as they are probably the best team in the league.

"However this was a move I shouldnt have made. I was told I would get games and think, all in all, I ended up getting about 20 minutes. "

The young defender also emphasised how important local camaraderie was when mulling over his options, as well as the extent to which Noel O'Donnell influenced his decision:

"Playing for Eglinton and being with all my mates, I've learned that football (that's soccer to you) isn't all about winning but also about having a bit of craic too.

"Noel was also a big part in me coming back because I always said if he was to have anything to do with it I'd play because he was one of the people who got me started playing when I was 16."

Clearly, however, the real issue for Lisahally fans was the acrimonious nature of McGlinchey's departure from his local club. At the time, the Listener suggested that it gave an insight into the mindframe of the modern footballer and even Eamon Dunphy was rumoured to have branded the behaviour as being akin to that of Cristiano Ronaldo; petulant, impatient, amateur. But McGlinchey appeared glad to finally bury the hatchet with the fans:

"This is the question I've been waiting for." he stated, "There has been that many different stories as to why I left.

"Downeys had asked me to sign before the start of the season, so it was always in my head. There was a misunderstanding between myself and the management where they thought I was injured when I wasn't.

"I wanted to play on a Sunday and thought I had been dropped for no reason, as I thought I played well the week before. With a bit of anger up, I said I wouldnt play for Lisah' again and went and signed for Downeys.", said McGlinchey

"People can be disappointed but I wanted to play on a Sunday and wasn't willing to stand on the bench. I'm back now and I'm here to prove a point to the fans"

Reflecting on his time at Downey's McGlinchey was full of praise for his former manager, saying he "gets on with him":

"People can say want they want about Downeys but don't forget in my first season with them we finished fourth and got beat in the cup final which we probably should have won.

"However, this season they were struggling to field a team and I thought a move was the right thing. The same way Top of the Hill didn't stop me moving back to Lisah'. They simply said sorry you didnt get more of a chance and good luck."

An avid gaelic footballer, McGlinchey plays for Slaughtmanus and he believes that GAA background gives a player a number of advantages on the football pitch.
McGlinchey in action for Slaughtmanus

"I think fitness is a big thing it brings, as a lot of the training is aimed at getting fit and you can see it in Gavin [McShane] and Aidy [O'Kane] when they play. They dont stop running.

"Being harder in a tackle too as you are used to getting hit every week and know what it takes to win the ball back.

"We should have got Mickey Cooke up to play at a young age because he's a big fairy when it comes to tackling - he doesn't want to wreck his hair half the time."

And while he is confident in his own ability and experience in the top division, the lynch-pin centre half knows that he faces a tough task breaking into a strong Lisahally team.

"There is big competition now. I dont expect just to walk back into the team but I'll wait for my chance and when I get it I wont be moved.

"I've played against all these teams last year and know how most of their strikers play, which gives me a bit of an advantage on the rest of the defence."

While Lisahally have struggled this year, McGlinchey has kept an eye on their progress and believes they have what it takes to turn their season around. He said:

"I think Lisahally's real challenge is to stay up and with the players they brought in like Gavin McShane, Jonny Hume and Mickey Cooke, along with the old boys like Jai, who always gives his all, there's no reason why we cant stay up.

"This Sunday is a 6 pointer and we really need to win it."

The "Judas" turned "Prodigal Son" has finally come back to his local team and he is keen to get started to help improve the fortunes of the club. He also has other aims:

"I'm just looking forward to gettin the kit on and digging in with the rest of the team to get Lisahally to finish as high up the table as they can

"And of course, I can't wait to slag [Mark] Duffy and Aidy [O'Kane] because they think they're superstars these days" he laughed.

One thing is sure, with McGlinchey added to the ranks of Lisahally, the days of conceding eight goals are over.

Make sure to get down to the pitch on Sunday morning to cheer the boys on to victory against Celtic Swifts.

Lisahally -v- Celtic Swifts Preview 20/11/11

Lisahally get back to league action this Sunday with a home clash against the fallen giants of local football, Celtic Swifts, reports Rory Kirk.

After their unconvincing win over neighbours Maydown last week, this weekend's game will be a six pointer for the wee doggs against a team that is also at the wrong end of the league table. The league is now half way through its schedule and Lisahally will need to start collecting points to survive a relegation scrap come April.

This game however is a great chance to collect three points and on the reverse fixture Lisah' should have won easily against what resembled a Swifts over-40 team. According to my spies the only absentees from squad will be Emmett Kirk and Jonny Hume, therefore Stroker will have a strong squad to choose from with Decky Brown returning from holiday and Petie Doherty from ankle injury.

After the performances of the last two weeks, certain players will not be guaranteed starting places and if they do survive the axe their games will need to be raised and competition for places is very high at present.

On Sunday Lisahally need to ensure that over confidence and complacency has not crept into squad and that all last years work does not go to waste. Sunday should also see the return of the prodigal son Kieran Mc Glinchey. This is another great addition to squad and let's hope he is here to stay for many seasons to come.

With Stroker gradually building a squad of Strathfoyle youth the visions we had are now coming into reality and surely we have a potential team of winners for years to come. This will start in my eyes with three points on Sunday down in Strathfoyle Arena and hopefully kick start the wee doggs back barking.

The Highs and Lows of Mickey Cooke

Filled with promise from an early age, Michael Cooke was part of a formidable Don Bosco's side in his youth which included a number of local football luminaries including former Republic of Ireland Under 19 international and current Derry City man Ruairí Harkin. A passionate footballer with an eye for goal, Cooke has returned to play for his local team under Noel O'Donnell after a stop-start love-affair with the Strathfoyle men.

The tall playmaker admitted that his experience with Lisahally has been filled with highs and lows, but has expressed his joy at the fact that he is now playing again.

"It's true Lisah' and myself haven't always been on the best terms, down to slanderous remarks made in the media and all round bad vibes coming out of the club", he said.

"But all that seems to be resolved and I'm glad to be back playing for my local team with my mates again. The craic's good!"

And that positivity is also reflected in Cooke's opinion on the club's chances of avoiding relegation after a "brutal start to the season".

"I'm sure everyone would agree that if there's anyone in Strathfoyle that knows their football, it's stroker [Noel O'Donnell] and since he's come in, bringing a few fresh faces in Jonny Hume and Gavin McShane (and a few blasts from the past) me, everyone in the changing rooms seems to be on the same side, and enjoying themselves which can only be good for our chances of survival."

Cooke (centre) playing for Lisahally

Cooke also shared his thoughts on the return of the "Judas"-turned-"Prodigal Son", Kieran McGlinchey. Laughing sarcastically at the question, Cooke quipped: "I don't know what all the fuss is about. He's more at home on a building site than a football pitch anyway, the Polish looking c**t.", before quickly reassuring this reporter that he was, in fact, joking.

"He's a great addition to be bringing in to the squad," Cooke admitted, but conceded that the former lynch pin will have a battle on his hands for a place, "Stiff competition these days".

However, staying positive, Cooke was frank in his appraisal of McGlinchey, laughing: "Im sure if "wee Arshavin" gets his spot back he'll take some moving, the fat c**t!"

With the squad growing and gelling smoothly, the midfielder suggested that Lisahally have no need to strengthen, considering the "good mix of youth and experience in the ranks, which bodes well for the future".

However, he welcomed any addition that would improve the squad.

"If there's a chance to bring in a few players to benefit the squad, then of course the more the merrier, especially if we can bring in someone who can show Aidy how to tie his laces"

"We'd be flying then.", he joked.

Having settled well back into the squad, Cooke expressed his concern at being left alone in the showers with Big Joe:

"That's not good for any man's confidence, he's a tripod!"

Reassuming a serious front, Cooke reflected on his long career with Lisahally, which started at the youthful age of 16. When asked what his career highlight, he mulled over a few candidates.

"Picking up the trophy for Best Young Player in my debut season at the tender age of 16 was good steam, as was the cup triumph a few years ago and the night out after it,"

"But my highlight so far must be Duffys sister... it has to be!", he laughed.

After scoring at the weekend, the versatile forward laid down his personal aims for the rest of the season, which included scoring more goals to help maintain a good cup run and of course to make sure Lisahally stay in the Premier Division, "That would be ideal.", he said.

And Cooke strongly believes that there are "big things in store in future" if Lisahally can "Keep 'er lit".

"Shake 'n' Bake!", says he.

Rory's View: Lisahally 4-0 Maydown

Well hello sports fans and welcome back. As I cut the legs off the bed I have been lying low this last few weeks but a report is overdue, so here is my analysis on today's game against our aloof neighbours Maydown.

First question: how many of their players actually come from Maydown? On a balmy November morning with the mercury hitting 16c I was down the pitch first thing and surely it is the most scenic pitch this side of richmond at this time of year. Credit must go to the residents of Beechwood for owning such a wonderful arena and also credit to Eglinton man Barry Murray who is first down every game, a lesson for all players.

With the players arriving in dribs and drabs the pre match tension was building and the loyal fans were looking for an improved Lisah' after last week's drunken antics. With the club photographer also in attendance there was a wild bit of posing being done, but Alan Duffy mysteriously went missing. The changing room before match was good craic and great to see it as that's the way it should be, just like old times. Somebody however defaced the wall with pro-Lisahally graffiti and this man will be caught and banned from Lisah' for life, the clampet. Also it was the first time in all my years around changing rooms that a man put on muddy socks from last week, the stoke. With the pre match talk delivered by Stroker, just like I taught him, and the warm up completed it was time to rumble.

We had a good team out with only Decky and wee Fernando missing due to injury and unexplained injuries. When the full team is back, competition for places will be tight so everyone will need to be on their "A" game every week.

First half was underway and a bit of early probing by both teams caused neither team much worry until a defensive slip up from Maydown let the cookie Kirk in to put Lisah' in front with a nice finish - the early nite spent horizontal jogging with fi fi paid dividends. To be fair Maydown didn't lie down and had chances but big Joe Gomez was in control and they came to nothing. With the game not up to much I went up to charge my batteries and missed what I heard was a cracker 30 yarder form Gavin Mc Shan', as Aidy calls him. Great goal from a great player - my type of midfielder who isnt afraid to mix it and has been a great addition since Stroker's appointment. He was my man of the match today, well done Gavin and keep it up.

The wee doggs went further ahead after a great finish from Micky Cookie monster, another good addition to squad and seems to have matured a bit as a footballer. You would think at 3 nil Lisah' were strolling this game but this was not the case and Maydown gave as good as they got and deserved more. With the half time break looming the management team had to raise the troops as it was a very flat and dull first half. With the half time team talk under way the highlight of half time was the lovely oranges expertly cut by number one Wag Claire. What would the boys do without them. We will have do get her more than flowers this season, 3 pounds anyone.

Second half under way once again Lisah' could not get into gear and it was time to freshen a few things up, the postman marshall came on and gave a different dimension and put in a good shift. The invisible man O'Kane came on from his return from injury and local legend big D.K. entered the fray and all did well for team. Also congrats to Mark Duffy who left at half time to start his new job with Stringfellows. As I say not much really happened second half and it was a lack-lustre performance from Lisah' with a lot of huffing and puffing with too much long range shots and some players holding the ball too much instead of doing the simple thing. Maydown missed a penalty and the scoreline could have been closer. Maybe we came down to their level but Lisahally are much better than today.

The highlight of second half was a great midfield run from Mc Shan' who was brought down for a penalty which he coolly dispatched into top corner to make it four nil and send the game out of sight. The game faded away to final whistle and Lisah' went through to the quarter finals with improvement needed to go further in this cup. However a win is a win and Stroker knows what is needed and with Celtic Swifts next week in Strathfoyle we have a great chance of three points and without doubt rise up the table for a top four finish in my eyes.

Match over and all happy there was a nice buzz around Lisah' this morning which I liked and the players all seemed in good form and together as one. Jai headed to Dublin in his formula one car and I am sure he is in good form tonight Karen. 3 pound Danny and his wag will be in good form down the Pont tonight and the wee doggs will be hitting the Sugar dancefloor for some jiveing and all the other weirdos will be cooped up playing Call of Duty. Let's hope Gomez gets a good nights sleep as he goes into the real world tomorrow with his new job drinking beer, good luck Joe. With 5 weeks to go to the much anticipated Married men Single men match, where else would you get a team like Lisahally wee doggs and our loyal supporters near and far.

Until the next time Woof Woof !!!

The Prodigal Son Returns

The Lisahally Listener has learned that former Lisahally player Kieran McGlinchey has re-signed for his former club in a shock move from Downeys.

McGlinchey's football (that's soccer to him) career is the perfect parable, as he made the transition from Judas to the Prodigal Son.

The talented defender was shrouded in acrimony when left his local club at the start of the 2010-2011 season. His decision inevitably led to cries of "Judas!" from his teammates and the loyal Lisahally fan base who were incensed at his mercenary ways.

However, Lisahally enjoyed a season of unprecedented success without him and McGlinchey was notable by his absence at the end of season award ceremony.

The defender came under strong criticism from Lisahally fans, but he returned in kind and was known to be critical of Lisahally when they achieved promotion, scoffing that they would be the "whipping boys" of the league.

There was nevertheless ongoing discussion about a return to the Strathfoyle club and Aidy O'Kane remarked that rumours were rife that a deal was close to completion, with Lisahally reportedly offering to double the pre-match diet of Mega Meanies he was on at Downeys.

And it seems there was indeed truth to the rumours as Lisahally officially confirmed the transfer was complete on November 13th.

Although his talent is undoubted, McGlinchey will face stiff competition for a starting berth in the rejuvenated Lisahally backline, but his addition to the squad is certainly a welcome one.

Feature: All Time Lisahally XI - Noel O'Donnell

Former Lisahally captain Noel O'Donnell was formerly on the books at Peterborough and throughout his career, "Stroker" demonstrated his abundance of skill and class on the football pitch. Now Lisahally manager, he has given the Listener his All Time XI, but like the rest, admitted he could have named 5 teams.

"Spike in nets because of big game saves and he is a tremendous shot stopper.
Sean Hargan: Quick, strong and had springs in his boots. Loves a physical game. Could play anywhere on the pitch but I think he was at his best at the back for Park and Lisahally.
David Ogilby: Different class, great defender although most of his games for Lisahally were at forward. Hopefully we haven't seen the last of him in a Lisah' shirt....but not for a few years yet.
Libby Mullan: Super player, strong as a bull and knew were the net was. Moved to defence at Lisahally and stood out by a mile.
Chris Tracey: Was the Alan Hansen of Lisahally, played football when others about him may have hoofed the ball. Played football how it should be played.

Jai White: Quality player great attitude ability and could easily move up a level. Type of player every team would want.
Topher Whoriskey: Great touch, read the game but was also a tough tackling all round midfielder. Kept it simple and played the game on the deck. How he never played a number of games at senior level is beyond me.
Colin Moran: Lightning with quality, it's a pity he stopped playing so young because he was a tremendous talent. Lisah' haven't had a winger like him since.
Decky Brown: Quality player, classy and another who could have played at senior level.

Spencer Tracey: Natural goal scorer. First man I saw score a goal with a back heel out of no where....still think his son Lenny was better than him though!
Diesel Brown: Speed, and knew where the net was. In his prime there was no forward better in the D&D.

Subs
Mark Tracey: Just edged out for a starting berth, not much got passed Mark
Shaun Whoriskey: Another who just misses out, but is still playing. Lisahally through and through and doesn't lose much in the air. Must hold the record for Lisahally's most appearances.
Chris Gilloway: Physical player which every team needs, plus in my first Married Men v Single Men match at the age of 13 he emptied me and actually put me over the banking at the Strathfoyle Arena. Lesson Learned!
Rory Kirk: Like a wine he improved with age, die hard Lisahally player/manager/supporter and will be involved once again in the near future in some capacity."

Paddy said:
"It takes few words to describe this team: each and every one of them played for the jersey.
Two fulbacks, relentless Dermy Boyle - arguably the best footballer to come out of Strathfoyle -, Chris Tracey, cool and calculated. Topher, our midfield dynamo, Charlie O' Kane and Trevor Tracey scored goals for fun. Spencer scored nine in one game which might still be a record in the D&D. Libby could play anywhere and is still outstanding in the over 40s.
The bench are a group of all round players who never let you down."

Don Boscos -v- Lisahally Preview 6/11/11

Lisahally entertain their old foes Don Boscos on Sunday 6th November. Kick off is 11:30 am at the Swilly Stadium, Templemore Complex.

Lisahally have recently started getting their act together after the appointment of ex-captain Noel O'Donnell to the management team and he has drafted in approximately five players to help the Lisahally cause.

Don Boscos, managed by Liam Bonner have assembled a useful squad this season and this Sunday's game will be a good pointer on how much Lisahally has improved over the past few weeks, as Boscos will be very hard to beat.

John Robertson is still doubtful due to a jarred knee and faces a late fitness test while Cathal O'Kane has recovered from a stomach bug. Noel Coyle who was suffering from sore ribs returns to a full strength squad.

The problem this week for Noel O Donnell will be how to fit all the players in, so there are sure to be a few disappointed players come Sunday. This however, in my opinion, is a good thing and will ensure that players have to fight for their place, as the bench will be strong.

Big Joe Robertson continues in nets after his sucessful return in the last game out, but will neeed to be at his best come Sunday as Boscos possess a potent strikeforce.

This should be a good open game and hopefully the "wee doggs" come out barking and keep the pride in their local club.

Feature: All Time Lisahally XI - Paddy Kelly

Not many Lisahally players can say they played in the League of Ireland, but Paddy "Horse" Kelly can. Kelly was a part of a Finn Harps team that included José Mukendi, Declan McIntyre and Con McLaughlin, who was the first Donegal man to score 100 goals in the League of Ireland. Kelly's career at Lisahally saw him start games at centre back, only to be subbed at half time so that he could go over the border and play for Drumoghill!

Paddy said a few words on his choices:

"Didn't play that often but Watty was a quality keeper, could have been at a higher standard. Chris Tracey, Mr Consistent, knew how to play football with no complaints. Ogilby in the centre, the quiet man-mountain and one of the best defenders to come out of Derry. Myself, a blow-in, but outstanding all the same. Decky Brown at left back, strong footballer, could have been a pro. Right midfield, Sean Hargan, solid footballer, great talker. Left midfield, Dick Tracey, mostly a full back but top class, a ref's nightmare. In the middle, Stroker, who was different class, with Topher Whoriskey, the cream of the crop and simply the best footballer to come out of Strathfoyle. Up front, Diesel Brown, outstanding goalscorer, alongside Libby Mullan - with Topher - the creme de la creme, a true gentleman.

Of the subs, Jai - a good man, fully committed to the cause. Young Aidy, has bags of potential, great natural left foot. Snay, "The Man", the water carrier, great for team morale, and Hector - there's a man who'd go through a brick wall for you."

Continuing with the nostalgia, the Listener asked Sean Hargan for his All-Time Lisahally squad. Hargan has been a loyal Lisahally man for many years and when he returned to the Lisahally team under the stewardship of Rory Kirk and Danny Brown, his experience proved to be a vital asset to the double winning side. "It was hard to pick a team because Lisah' had so many great players over the years.", said Hargan

A few words from Sean Hargan:

"Niall Walker was a great keeper for Lisah'. Good shot stopper and had great positioning. Jai White, a 120% man who never knew the word 'beaten'. Shaun "The Quiet Man" Whoriskey, solid in the tackle, great in the air and always popped up with the odd goal. Libby Mullan a Lisah' legend, centre forward turned centre half. "Marvellous" Mark Tracey gets the nod at left back. Solid full back who took no prisoners. Noel "Stroker" O'Donnell, a true genius whose skill and speed of thought will never be seen again at Lisah', an amazing talent! Sean Hargan, an attacking midfielder who was good in the air and loved the tackle. Topher "The legend" Whorkiskey, a natural leader whom everyone looked up to - one of the best I've had the privilege to play with at Lisahally. Charlie O'Kane, a cheeky, cocky, chappy who scored bagfuls of goals. Diesel Brown, the most naturally gifted goalscorer I've played with, who could create chances from nowhere. Rory Kirk gets the nod beside Diesel - a hustling, bustling centre forward with a never say die attitude. Loved the "Old School" tackle.

Subs: Danny Brown, Mr Versatile, who could play midfield or full back. Brian Coyle, lightning fast midfielder with the knack of scoring. Hector "Watch Your Shins" Duffy, an animal on the field and a gentleman off it. Noel Coyle, A Lisha' man through and through who never gave less than 100%."

Feature: All Time Lisahally XI - Rory Kirk

In a new feature in the Lisahally Listener, as an indulgence in nostalgia and fun, we have asked several past players to choose their All-Time Lisahally XI. The first past player to offer his All Time squad is the man who, along with Danny Brown, helped bring the double to Strathfoyle and promotion to the top division: Rory Kirk.

In choosing his squad, Kirk arrived at the decision to focus only on the "Old Dogs", as he considers that the "Wee Dogs" have plenty of time to cement their reputations, but conceded that it was a difficult task, stating that he could have picked three teams.

Rory Kirk's All-Time Lisahally XI

Jai White Shan Whorisky Rory Kirk Hector Duffy

N. O'Donnell Topher Whorisky S. Hargan Colin Moran

Diesel Brown Libby Mullan (c)

Substitutes
Mark Tracey
Noel Coyle
Danny Brown
Doyley

A few words from Rory Kirk:
"
Spike in nets because in past few seasons he has won us big games, which he doesn't get credit for and is a excellent kicker. Jai white in at right back as he is a bonus to have in any team and a gentleman off the field. Hector Duffy at left back due to his tackling and pure balls to fight for the team. Shaun Whoriskey at centre back, he never says much but gives 100% every game and is a great tackler and header of the ball. Me beside him because I believe it was one of the most deadly centre back partnerships in the history of Lisahally.

Colin Moran on left wing due to his speed and quality crossing, a wasted talent. Noel O'Donnell on right wing due to his pure class on a football pitch. Topher Whorisky in centre midfield, hard as nails, no nonsense footballer who did the simple thing. Sean Hargan beside Topher, great talker, tackler and goal scorer - great to be a wee dogg with him and Topher in midfield. Up front, Diesel Brown, a natural goalscorer who rarely missed, never was replaced. Up front with Diesel was Libby Mullan who, in his prime, was about 10 stone and scored for fun but could play anywhere on the pitch. These men are Lisahally legends.

Subs-Noel Coyle, "Mr Consistent" has given everything for Lisah' and is an undervalued player. Danny Brown, the wee bull was a great reader of the game and a great passer. Brian Coyle, lightning quick and could beat men easily with a good end result. Marvellous Mark Tracey could also play anywhere and was one of the hardest but fairest players I played against and with. All the above players gave 100% for Lissa and thats all we ever asked."

The Listener Speaks to Aidy O'Kane

The Lisahally Listener caught up with strong left back Aidy O'Kane today. We asked him about life at Lisahally and how difficult it was to play the foreign sport after many years.

Lisahally Listener
- Hi Aidy, how's it going?
Aidy O'Kane - All is good, just recovering from a weekend of footie and the auld legs are like lead. Only 22 and I'm getting to old for this craic .

(LL) -You were a talented footballer in your youth, notably helping to guide the Strathfoyle Youth Club to glory in an all-Ireland competition based in Galway, but your first passion was, it seemed, always Gaelic and as such your Lisahally debut came relatively late. Did you find it hard to re-adjust to soccer at all?
AO'K - Naw not at all. Saying that in my first couple of games when a few high balls came into left back, I was in the air with two hands up then thinking to myself 'what the feck are you doing Aidy, you're playing the foreign sport now'! Other than that it was grand getting back into the swing of things. The first training session I was taking the complete hand out of Mark Duffy for the full hour and a half.

(LL) - You were an integral part of the Lisahally machine that won the double last season along with promotion, how did you enjoy your experience?
AO'K - First season and success like that was great. Not everyday them sort of feelings come around.

(LL) - Were you disappointed not to win player of the year?
AO'K - Not at all, I had a good start to the season then after getting a couple of knocks in games I never really got back to full fitness. As well as that big JR totally deserved it, then there is the likes of Jai, Stroker, Petie and Emmett who all had great seasons also .

(LL) - Lisah' have been experiencing a terrible time in the top division, but recent developments have seen a turnaround of fortunes - what do you think was the cause of the poor start and do you think Lisah' has what it takes to avoid relegation?
AO'K - Not a matter of thinking, I know Lisah' will stay in the Premier this year. The likes of Gavin, Mickey, and Jonny back playing along with veterans such as Davey K and big John Marshall. I think the reason for the horrible start was because of not having a full available squad due to gaelic and also the lack of numbers at pre-season training. I personally think a good pre-season is vital to a good start to a new campaign . Also the keeper situation didn't help matters but with Big Joe back in after a quality performance that's that sorted.

(LL) - Who would you say is the biggest joker at the club?
AO'K - He is a plonker, but Duffy always gets a reaction when he walks into the changing room. If he's not talking about women he's talking about some other waffle and everybody gets a good laugh at him.

(LL) - The best fasion sense?
AO'K - The best fashion sense would have to go to Emmett Kirk. Showed up yesterday (Sunday 30th Oct.) for the Abercorn game in freezing temperatures wearing a pair of 3/4 lengths and a T-shirt that was too big for him chewing 'gum' as Emmett would call it. After coming back from the States he gets serious grief off Jai but in honestly Jai is right , Emmett must think he is a Yank after that dress code yesterday!

(LL) - Outside of soccer you are known to be friends with former Lisahally player, Kieran McGlinchey, do you think he'll ever make the return to his local club?
AO'K - I heard from a reliable source in Du Pont on Sunday that the prodigal son's return is imminent after another disappointment playing for Top of the Hill on Sunday and only getting 10mins game time as a sub...we shall see!

(LL) - How have you coped with the self-proclaimed superstardom of one Mark Duffy?
AO'K - Aw, at this stage all the crap that comes out of that man's mouth goes in one of my ears and out the other. Self praise is no praise .

(LL) - Good luck for the rest of the season Aidy. Any final thoughts?
AO'K - Thanks Listener, keep believing Lisah'! Woof woof!

Call for Writers

The Lisahally Listener is issuing a call for budding sports writers who can contribute to the site by providing short match reports and articles on all things Lisahally.

Given that I am based in Galway for most of the year, I cannot be in regular attendance at games and would be very grateful for any assistance.

It is completely voluntary, but believe it or not, this is an ideal opportunity for young aspiring journalists seeking to gain experience in the field. It is also a rewarding activity, especially suited to fans of Lisahally football club, or those with an interest in the social hub of Strathfoyle.

So if you believe you can provide match reports, articles or blog posts, please don't hesitate to get in touch, by leaving a comment here, on the facebook page or by emailing lisahallylistener@gmail.com

Cheers,

Lisahally Battered by Bosco's

Lisahally 2-8 Don Bosco's (28/08/11)

Not even the X-Factor of Eoghan Quigg could prevent Lisahally from succumbing to a heavy home defeat to Don Bosco's this Sunday. It was a bad day at the office for all concerned as the home side were powerless to resist a team that is considered to be fairly mediocre by the Premier Division's standards.

It was an unfamiliar line up for Lisahally, who were without stalwarts John Robertson and Aidy O'Kane during the first half. Surfer dude Ben Holly and Eoghan Quigg were new faces in the starting line up, which also included Strathfoyle man Kevin Whoriskey at right back and a return for Mickey Cooke, who started up front.

After the game, manager Danny Brown was visibly disappointed and bemoaned the lack of heart shown by his players. The loyal Lisahally supporters who witnessed the spectacle were also left severely disappointed and many have questioned whether the team is taking any pride in playing for their local team.

One thing is certain, a major improvement in attitudes and performances is needed immediately if Lisahally are to compete at this level. One shudders at the thought of playing Top of the Hill Celtic and the like.

Improvement Needed

The 2010 – 2011 season was a massive success for Lisahally Football Club and indeed the people of the Enagh area. The Strathfoyle men experienced a season of unprecedented glory, clinching a league and cup double, in turn securing promotion to the top division. It has since been a relatively quiet summer in Strathfoyle, but there have been several recent developments which may be a cause for concern to the management.

Veteran player Sean Hargan, whose experience was absolutely vital in Lisahally's success last season, has made the decision to hang up his boots in order to invest his abilities in management, having taken on the responsibility of steering the fortunes of Eglinton F.C. However it could potentially prove to be a problematic move for Lisahally, as Hargan has encouraged a large portion of the Lisahally first team to join him as he embarks on his managerial debut. The Lisahally management has yet to comment on the situation, but playing football on Saturday as well as Sunday undoubtedly heightens the risk of injury and exhaustion, and if Lisahally are to compete at a higher level they will require all of their players to act professionally and be at the top of their game. Obviously this is not professional football; players are effectively volunteers and are not bound to one club, but the impact is potentially detrimental. It must be noted that this is not a tirade against Hargan, who has served Lisahally admirably over the years, or indeed Eglinton F.C., the responsibility ultimately rests with the players.

Rory Kirk was said to have been absolutely furious at the turnout at the club's initial pre-season training session, where remarkably only two senior players were present. He questioned the loyalty and desire of the players in the aftermath, remarking that he was worried for the coming season. In addition to the low turnout, there was further disappointment as young player Peter Mahon suffered a horrendous ankle break, one which will possibly rule him out for the majority of the season. The injury is seen as an enormous blow to Lisahally, as Mahon is widely considered to be a player with great potential and Lisahally's squad is already quite small. Utility player Conor Mullan will also miss the beginning of the season due to commitments in the U.S.A. Former captain and talisman, Noel O'Donnell has retired and it remains to be seen who will fill his boots

If Lisahally are to continue their progress, it is crucial that the foundation they possess be strengthened and, with the retirement of experienced players such as Sean Hargan and Noel O'Donnell, two young players already ruled out, with only one player added to the squad, not to mention the worries over players' priorities, the future does not look particularly bright. The opening game of the season was a disaster for Lisahally and while Tristar possess Derry football luminary “Ug” and a number of semi-professionals in their squad, such as Aaron Nash and Mark Nicell, the defeat of 8-2 is, nevertheless, unacceptable. The Strathfoyle men cruised to promotion last season and they were more than competitive in their outings against Premier Division clubs in the cups, so to suggest that they will be nothing more than “whipping boys” in this league is surely a ludicrous thought. Rory Kirk decided to take the positives from the game and stated that the result will serve as a wake-up call to some of his players, reminding them that they simply cannot rest on their laurels when playing for their local team.

As a closing thought, if Lisahally players are in need motivation, they need not look further than Derry City player Ryan McBride and Sunderland new-boy, James McClean. McBride was playing Saturday morning football in the Derry and District League last season before signing for Derry and this season, aged 21, he has played at the highest level in Ireland, where he impressed so much that Damien Richardson selected him to represent the League of Ireland in the Dublin Super Cup. McClean too has shown how hard work and a burning desire to succeed can catapult a player into a professional career. Having previously played for Trojans in the D&D, McClean played for Derry before earning international recognition and at the age of 22, a contract with Niall Quinn's Sunderland. Therefore to conclude, do yourself a favour and take playing for Lisahally seriously; you never know who is watching.

Lisahally Face Player Crisis

With the 2011/2012 season due to kick off next week, the Lisahally Listener understands that Lisahally are experiencing serious difficulties with players that could possibly affect the fortunes of the Strathfoyle club as it prepares to enter the Premier Division.

Rory Kirk issued a scathing attack on the complete lack of interest being shown by many first teamers, suggesting that perhaps Lisahally is no longer number one priority for his players.

"Maybe other teams have priority over Lisah' now and we are second best." stated the manager, before continuing, "When you have 100-150 loyal fans down at the pitch season long, I know where my priority would be."

Kirk, who has just received recognition from Enagh Youth Forum in their annual "Valuing People Awards" for his sterling contribution to sport in Strathfoyle, has become increasingly frustrated by the dwindling numbers at training sessions and matches.

Player Emmett Kirk has also expressed his concern
, stating that "this is probably the biggest season Lisah will have" before concluding that "it's not looking good at all for next season."
It is understood that many of Lisahally's first team have been recruited by former Lisahally player Sean Hargan, who is now manager of Eglinton Football Club.

Prizegiving 2011

The Lisahally Listener was present at Lisahally's annual prizegiving last night and it is fair to say that it was an enjoyable evening. Lisahally legends from years gone by were present in all shapes and forms. Former Lisahally stalwart and current Coleraine captain, David Ogilby, took time out from his busy schedule to present the award winners with their trophies. The Lisahally Listener said a few words prior to the presentation:

On behalf of the Lisahally Listener, I would like to extend my congratulations to all involved with Lisahally Football Club for a remarkable season of achievement. From the managers and the players, who worked extremely hard all season, right through to the loyal fans, whose support was undoubtedly an essential element in the success of the club.

The 2010/2011 season is one which will go down as a turning point in the history of Lisahally F.C.. The beginning of the season saw the installation of a new and unproven management team in the form of Rory Kirk and Danny Brown, who took over the reins from longstanding manager Topher Whoriskey. Admittedly there were a few raised eyebrows around Strathfoyle at this appointment, but as the season unfolded the fans were quickly reassured that these were the right men to move Lisahally forward and here we are now, celebrating an unprecedented league and cup double - the most outstanding achievement in the club’s history.

Throughout the season the fans have had the joy of following the team through ups and downs and the Lisahally Listener is proud to be a part of that journey. We have witnessed the rise of heroes such as Mark Duffy, an absolute role model and inspiration to the younger generation, who demonstrated how, with hard work and determination, it is easy to overcome one‘s demons. Move over Paul McShane. On the other hand, we have also seen players plunged into controversy. Take, for example, the unceremonious fall from grace of a former Lisahally lynchpin, Kieran McGlinchey, who, like Judas, turned his back on his local club for thirty pieces of silver. Maybe some time in the future we will see the return of the prodigal son, who knows?

Thankfully, while these individual occurrences contribute to the drama surrounding the club, they do not inform its fortunes, for Lisahally’s success was built on a format of team spirit and uncompromising effort. Another key factor in the success is the fact that the local youth was encouraged to get involved with the club. This is something which must continue if the club is to continue progressing as a centrepiece in the community. Indeed there has been very little in the recent history of Strathfoyle that has conjured such an impressive display of community spirit as much as the exploits of Lisahally F.C. have done. Such developments are a resounding testament to the commitment and success of those involved with the club and long may it continue.

Lisahally Listener Fans' Player of the Year

Noel O'Donnell has been declared the Lisahally Listener Fans' Player of the Year, taking 39% of the vote in the online poll. This season will be O'Donnell's last, as he hangs up his boots, but he has capped off his Lisahally career with an impressive host of accolades, turning in amazing performances both on and off the field. The award is well deserved and the Lisahally Listener wishes to praise O'Donnell's sterling contribution to the Lisahally cause throughout his career. Indeed, he will be a hard man to replace.

Towering centre-half, John Robertson came in a close second, taking 32% of the vote and many Lisahally fans felt that 'Big J.R.' was an indispensable component in Lisahally's defence this season. He has drawn praise from all quarters, for his strength and determination, not to mention his devastating aerial prowess in both boxes.

Coming in third, with 16% of the vote was Mark Duffy. The self-proclaimed 'Big Man' has had an eventful season, which was well documented by the Listener. Duffy overcame personal demons at the beginning of the season to ensure that his name was a permanent fixture on the team-sheet, through his tremendous performances on the right side of the pitch. The dynamic character may still earn an accolade this season, as a number of his goals are rumoured to have made the long-list for the Goal of the Season award.

Double Trouble

Last weekend Lisahally defeated rivals Trojans on the hallowed turf of the Brandywell to finish the 2010-2011 season as 'Double' winners.

Champions
From left to right: Danny Brown, Noel O'Donnell and Rory Kirk

The success is unprecedented and is undoubtedly a strong testament to both the players' and managers' determination to transform the fortunes of the club. Indeed, the fortunes of the club have been remarkably transformed, and Lisahally Football Club once again occupies an important place in the heart of the Strathfoyle community, with games on Sunday regularly drawing a large number of spectators. Such a development is a welcome one because it provides the community with something to rally around, which fosters a healthy sense of community spirit. I, for one, hope that it continues long into the future.

Meanwhile, we have a long Summer ahead of us, and it is a perfect opportunity for the community of Strathfoyle to work together to further improve the fortunes of Lisahally Football Club and, arguably, the overall quality of life for those who reside in Strathfoyle and in the surrounding area of Enagh. The establishment of Lisahally youth football, for example, would be a start, as it would present a wonderful outlet for sports and recreation. The progress of the club will be a slow process, but, the team has shown what can be achieved in the space of one season. Hopefully, with the support of the community, greater progress can be made a reality.

Good Things Come to Those Who Wait

It is often said that good things come to those who wait, and this Sunday, after several weeks of delay, Lisahally will be hoping that those words ring true as they face title-rivals Trojans in a game that could potentially decide the league title.

Lisahally have already beaten Trojans this season in a close-fought game at the Brandywell and that, arguably, gives Lisahally the mental advantage. However, nothing can be taken for granted and the Lisahally management have been extremely keen to stress the importance of focus and preparation for this game, a game that may perhaps become a defining moment in the history of the club.

The seemingly perennial wait for the game against Trojans has, nevertheless, been a source of unease in Strathfoyle. Many fans worry that, with no competitive games in a number of weeks, it may disrupt the team’s momentum. However, the management has been proactive, taking steps to ensure that the team remains physically and mentally sharp, including arranging friendly games and long-distance runs. The most recent friendly, against former Ulster Senior League side Drumoghill F.C., finished 2-2. Despite the result, the performance served as an indication that the players still have a burning desire to win the League.

Although the season is far from over, the new regime of Kirk and Brown has proven to be quite capable, silencing the critics; Lisahally have already achieved promotion to the Premier Division and a semi-final place in the cup. Indeed, the unprecedented success has seen attendances soar, both home and away, something which Rory Kirk admits has helped his players enormously.

The game against Trojans will take place in Strathfoyle on Sunday 16th January. The Listener urges all Lisahally fans to make the effort to attend and cheer the team on to victory. Good things come to those who wait.

Match Report: Lisahally 2-2 Drumoghill

Having played no competitive games in over three weeks due to the terrible weather conditions, Lisahally management wished to use this friendly game as an exercise of shaking off the post-Christmas match-rust. However, despite some extra helpings of turkey and ham over the festive period, the Lisahally players performed reasonably well against the Co. Donegal side, showing the discipline and skill that has already seen them gain promotion to the Premier Division.

Both teams were evenly matched at the beginning of the game, with each side creating numerous chances. Lisahally went close from several set-pieces, and were particularly dangerous on the left side of the pitch with Cathal O'Kane and Aidy O'Kane linking up tremendously. However, it was Drumoghill who opened the scoring, punishing poor Lisahally defending to snatch the lead. Lisahally continued to make chances and Peter Doherty and Noel O'Donnell unleashed a number of shots but to no avail.

Lisahally made three changes in the second half. Conor Mullan replaced Peter Doherty on the right side of midfield, Christopher Nicholl replaced Mark Duffy at right back and Shaun Whoriskey made his return to the heart of the Lisahally defence when he replaced Sean Hargan. It didn't take Lisahally long to equalise, as Emmett Kirk volleyed a dire kickout from the Drumoghill goalkeeper off the post and into the net. Such was the unwavering belief in his ability, that the young man did not even watch the ball go into the net, and instead focused on his celebration.

Lisahally continued to dominate proceedings with Noel O'Donnell orchestrating moves from midfield, but when Spike spilled an innocuous high ball, he allowed a Drumoghill striker an easy finish from close range to make it 2-1, much to the despair of the Lisahally management. Lisahally flooded men forward, using both flanks, but simply could not find a goal. Conor Mullan showed determination to attack and made several direct runs down the right side, but struggled to get crosses in. Management made a bold move when they put towering defender John Robertson up front in place of Barry Murray. Topher Whoriskey offered the big man a pint as an incentive for a goal, but none was forthcoming. Robertson did, however, come agonizingly close with a header in the last five minutes, but it was a miss that has unfortunately made its way on to the "Miss of the Season" shortlist. Lisahally's efforts were eventually rewarded in the final minutes when Shaun Whoriskey deflected in a Mark Duffy shot, making the final score 2-2.

Speaking after the game, Rory Kirk and Danny Brown were happy enough with the performance, claiming that 2-2 was a fair result for both teams, but stressed the importance of remaining disciplined and regaining fitness as the league resumes. Indeed, there will be a team run on Tuesday January 4th and Danny Brown quipped that he would be following close behind with a whip for the slackers.
