Managers' Message

Rory Kirk, one half of the Lisahally management has taken this opportunity to send a New Year Message via the Lisahally Listener.
____________________________
On behalf on the management team of Danny and myself, I would like to wish our players, supporters, back room staff, sponsors and all connected with Lisahally F.C. a Happy New Year and a successful 2011.

Looking back on 2010 the club went through major changes in the structure and it was, in my belief, for the better. 2010 started badly for myself with a snapped achilles and on the playing front we finished the season with our usual 3rd place finish and out of all cups early. I used to hate this every year as we were much better than this and all we had to do was believe in ourselves more.

With the rumour mill in full flow that Topher was going on gardening leave, the season end saw the club looking for a new direction. At a team meeting the rumours proved to be true and myself and wee Danny moved into the hotseat with Topher moving into a director of football role. My first statement was that the days of coming 3rd etc. have to change and the youth in the area have to get more of a chance as we have to build a new team for the future.

With a good pre season under our belt and a few good new signing we went into the new season relaxed and focused. We enforced a few rules and discipline was to the forefront. On the pitch everyone was made aware it was a team game and not a team of individuals. The players were told to never give up and to hustle for every ball and for the first time this season we had a squad that we could call on at anytime which was most pleasing.

Our half term report after all this shows great improvement; promotion gained to top division, one game away from winning league title and we are in the semi final of the only cup so far played. We would like to thank the players for the backing they have given to the new changes within the club and getting behind Danny and I. We would also like to thank our fantastic supporters for getting behind the club and providing some community support which helps every week. Danny and I will continue to try our best to move Lisahally forward, so here is to a very successful 2011!

However success is one thing but during my christmas reading I came across this quote which is very true and let's make sure it never happens:
The Disease Of Me!
"When a successful organisation becomes infected with the disease of me,people who create 20 percent of the results will begin believing they deserve 80 percent of the rewards"

Happy New Year and Woof Woof!!!

Match Preview: Lisahally v Don Bosco's (14.11.10)

With Lisahally currently top of the First Division table, each fixture is crucial if the Strathfoyle Men are to maintain their impressive bid for promotion. However, this Sunday's game against Don Bosco's is a game that has an extra edge to it for Lisahally supporters.

Two seasons ago, under the stewardship of Topher Whoriskey, Lisahally defeated a strong Don Bosco's side in the First Division Cup final to take the cup home to the Strathfoyle Arena. Since then, both teams have developed a type of mini-rivalry and games between the two sides are often filled with drama, with the Creggan side inevitably providing tough opposition.
Lisahally captain Noel O'Donnell leaves Bosco's' midfielder Keith Toland in his wake in the 2008 Cup Final

As Lisahally aim to continue their march toward the title, management duo Rory Kirk and Danny Brown will be preparing their players for a tough task, placing an added emphasis on focus and determination to succeed. Fortunately for Lisah', there is a clean bill of health, with key players such as Aidy O'Kane making a return to the squad and Rory Kirk is expecting to hear all the 'dogs' barking.

*As part of the mental preparation before the game, The Listener suggests that each Lisahally player takes a bit of time to watch the video below, which will hopefully encourage focus.

View from the Stands: Gary 'Banger' Bryson

The Listener recently caught up with a man who is widely considered to have been one of Lisahally's most dedicated fans. However not only was he an avid fan, Gary 'Banger' Bryson is sometimes viewed as one of the 'Lost Boys' of Lisahally, because despite his undoubted ability, 'Banger' never got the chance to display his skills in a Lisahally shirt. As a result, he is often viewed as the Andy Reid to Topher Whoriskey's Giovanni Trapattoni. Speaking from the Southern Hemisphere, Bryson shares his thoughts.

Lisahally Listener: Good evening Gary, The Listener is delighted to have the opportunity to interview one of the greatest goal-scorers in Strathfoyle history. How are you?
Gary Bryson: Yeah I'm not bad, all is very well over here in Australia!

LL: Now that you are based in Australia, do you miss getting up on those cold Sunday mornings to watch your favourite local team?
GB: I never miss the cold weather back home but I do miss the games. Great entertainment provided week in week out.

LL: Have you been keeping up to date with the fortunes of Lisahally?
GB: Yeah now that I've moved to a city in Brisbane I can get online more and keep up to date with folk back home.

LL: What do you think about the change of management?
GB: I was always a big Topher fan but I was delighted when Rory decided to take the job. When he retired I said many times that he would go into management. You can ask him yourself and he will tell you. I did however recommend him for the Maydown job. [smiles cheekily]

LL: With Lisahally currently top of the league and on course for promotion, do you think they can maintain their form? If so, who do you think will be key to success?
GB: I can't really comment as I havent watched many of the games. That said, from what I've heard from Mark Duffy, he should get the Player of the Year award. Although I don't know if he is being biased but I wouldnt put Mark down for one to blow his own trumpet. [laughs]

LL: You have built up a reputation as being a deadly finisher, with many Stra-Heads dubbing you 'Van Bangelrooy', given your similarity to Ruud Van Nistelrooij. Do you ever feel that your talents were unduly overlooked by the Lisahally management?
GB: Listen, when I was younger I was always confident in terms of scoring goals. I think the problem with me not making it at Lisah' was the fact my that my overall ability was overlooked. Most Stra Heads dubbed me a 'joker' and claimed that I didnt take it seriously enough. With Topher being an old-fashioned manager too, I was never going to be considered for a callup. I think I was was judged on everything other than my goalscoring credentials, which was a pity.

LL: You famously scored the winning penalty in last year's 'Married Men versus Single Men' game and with this years' coming up, will you be making a reappearance?
GB: I'm afraid I wont be making an appearance this year. I would love to land back on a helicopter and grab the winner but that's something which I don't think will happen.

LL: Who would you consider to be Lisahally's best ever player?
GB: Lawrence 'Libby' Mullan is my favourite all time Lisah' player. I've played against him for the Single Men and he's a hard player to get past.

LL: Any final thoughts?
GB: I'd like to tell the Lisah' players to keep barking the way they have been barking and hopefully the league title is on its way. I also would like to bet anyone who believes the single men will be beaten by the married men this year cause it aint gona happen. Thank you Listener!

Exclusive: Mark Duffy opens up to The Listener

At the beginning of the season, Mark Duffy looked a shade of the man he was the previous season, but the self-proclaimed role-model has since reformed. The dynamic player has made himself a permanent feature in the Lisahally side this season and is held in high regard by fans, team-mates, coaches and perhaps most importantly, by himself.

____________________________

Lisahally Listener:
Hi Mark, thanks for agreeing to do the interview, how are you?
Mark Duffy: I'm feeling fantasic at this present moment. I'm just basking in the glory of two of the finest goals the Lisah' faithful has ever witnessed.

LL: After amazingly struggling to get into the team at the start of the season, you have worked hard and now find yourself a regular on the right side of midfield. Was it difficult for you to cut out the partying and the women?
MD: Well, for me it was a mental battle but thankfully I overcame my demons! The management stated that they only dropped me to give me a good kick up the ass and that has certainly worked - just look at the Big Man's performances in the past four matches! I would also like to state that I definitely miss the partying, but, from what I've heard, the women are missing 'Big Duff' more!

LL: How do you feel about Lisah''s chances of promotion? Is this squad capable of winning the league? Are you enjoying your football?
MD: Well, to be honest, at the start of the season I was hating every minute of it, but recently I have hit form and the excitement has come back. At this present moment Lisah' are top of the table by a point - thanks to Mark Duffy barking with two amazing goals - but Lisah' have a thing for throwing it away. However, with the new management in place hopefully that won't be allowed to happen.

LL: Players coming and going is part of the game, but Lisahally experienced a massive transfer saga at the beginning of the season with Kieran McGlinchey, who decided to leave for Downey's. What is your opinion on the matter?
MD: Everything within the Lisah' camp was kept 'hush-hush' on this issue but 'Big Duff' never lies to his loyal followers. Of course it has a negative effect on the team, as the young man was one of our best players in the last few seasons. As a young man myself I can see the temptation of free food and free tickets . Imagine how many 'hurs' I could get with the all the free tickets every week?! Eh?! [laughs]

LL: Considering that you are a friend of McGlinchey's, there were rumours that you may have been tempted to follow in his footsteps, especially with the allure of free alcohol and crisps. Did you ever consider leaving your local club?
MD: At the start of the season I wasn't enjoying my football and my career took a turn for the worst when I was left on the bench after being a regular figure for the past few years. So it definitely did cross my mind to leave the Stra' Arena for good, but I sat down with the management and they explained it was only to teach me a lesson and I was going to be an influential figure in their plans for the future. As you can see now I'm like a new player, with the whole team supporting me every step of the way.

LL: The Listener understands that you are now resuming your studies in Derry. Some fans have branded you as an inspiration. Do you find it difficult to balance football with your studies?
MD: Well, I must admit when I was in Belfast things were a bit crazy. There were women every night - but that's just the sort of thing that 'Big Duff' is used to! But now that I am home, everything has changed because the 'Big Man' is watching every single move I make, so there will be no messing about and turning up drunk for matches. This goes to show that even a party animal like myself can change his ways, so there is definitely hope for Stevo yet!

LL: Who would you say is your role model?
MD: My role model? Hmm, now that is a hard one! Well I would definitely have to say my da because, just look at the man! Fifty years of age but doesn't look a day over twenty-five and he's still battling on! That's something Shaun can't even say because he's around thirty and he's broken down completely!

LL: What are your goals for the rest of season?
MD: My primary goal is to help the "team" win the league and hopefully a few cups along the way. Then I'd like to score a few more goals. Top goal-scorer wouldn't be too bad would it? [Laughs]

LL: Any final thoughts?
MD: Well my two screamers at the weekend definitely deserve a mention. Both of them put Emmett Kirk's tame effort to shame. No better man you know!

Victory Edges Strathfoyle Men Closer to Title

Lisahally 4-1 Culmore (7.11.10)

Lisahally claimed a crucial victory today as they ran out 4-1 winners over Culmore at the Strathfoyle Arena. The win sends the Strathfoyle Men to the summit of the table and as the title race heats up, the management remains hopeful that they can maintain this prodigious form until the end of the season.

Lisahally took an early lead in the first half through talismanic midfielder, Noel O'Donnell, whose determination to play despite injury was somewhat of an inspiration to his teammates. However, Lisah' appeared to sit back after the goal and Culmore began to flood men forward in an attempt to find an equaliser. It looked like Culmore were certain to score, but stark defending and acrobatic goalkeeping ensured that Lisahally retained their lead and they eventually found another, as Emmett Kirk applied a wonderful finish to a swift counter-attack, making it 2-0 to the home side. Following the concession of the second goal, Culmore's urgency increased and the 'Toffs' deservedly found a goal before half time.

Despite leading 2-1, the Lisahally management team was far from happy at the display, berating the team for allowing Culmore to play. Indeed, the management remarkably made two substitutions at half-time, much to the surprise of the fans, with veterans Noel Coyle and Shaun Whoriskey entering the fray. Such a display of ruthlessness serves as a timely reminder that the new Lisahally management will stop at nothing to stamp out any element of weakness in the team.

In the second half, Lisahally played with renewed vigour and the half-time substitutions proved to be inspired. Lisah' pressed tenaciously and each player hustled, chasing down every ball, allowing Culmore no time to play. This added impetus came at a cost though, as several Lisahally players were shown yellow cards. Nevertheless, it was an approach which eventually yielded two more goals, as 'Magnificent' Mark Duffy bagged a brace, including one goal that went in off the bar, making 4-1 the final score. Interestingly, a section of the support has expressed concern over Duffy's performance today, claiming that there is a danger that the estate will never hear the end of it.

Speaking after the game manager Rory Kirk said he was pleased and lavished praise on his team:
"Seriously, well done to the squad. Let's keep it going. The team played well, but a special mention must go to Niccs, who led by example today. Not forgetting young Peter Mahon, who did well when he came on and was unlucky not to score"

Star Man: Christopher Nicholl. The strong defender has built up a reputation among the Lisahally faithful as being reminiscent of Nemanja Vidic and today he reinforced that, leading by example and stirring up his teammates with a rallying cry befitting of a scene from Gladiator.

Match Preview: Lisahally v Culmore (7.11.10)

Lisahally will face Culmore at the Strathfoyle Arena this Sunday and, with the title race heating up, the vibrant Beechwood crowd are hopeful of another victory, which would send the Strathfoyle men to the top of the league once more. Lisah' arguably go into this game with the mental advantage, having previously defeated a spirited Culmore side, 3-2. However, a number of key players remain doubts, so the management may be forced to make some changes to the team.

Last week's game was postponed, much to the management's relief, but several players have failed to shake injuries and it is looking increasingly likely that there will be changes to the starting lineup. Talismanic midfielder, Noel O'Donnell is still unavailable, as is Jai White, while attacking full-back Aidy O'Kane is unavailable due to GAA commitments (it will be interesting to see whether O'Kane is reprimanded for dabbling in 'foreign sports'). Nevertheless, Lisahally have been able to recall 'Mr. Consistent', Shan Whoriskey and towering centre-half, John Robertson may also be available. Forward Peter Mahon is also available, providing more options in attack. Other than that, the team looks set to remain unchanged.

Manager Rory Kirk is optimistic about his team's chances, insisting that the players should be sufficiently motivated following the Halloween break. It is interesting to note that, despite not having a game last week, Kirk remained focused on his team. He did not take the opportunity to relax and instead went on a scouting mission, watching Maydown take on Strand, at the Strathfoyle Arena. It is thought that Lisahally may be considering a bid for Brian O'Kane in January, but last week, it was Christopher Maguire who stole the show in centre midfield, as a dire Maydown side suffered a 1-0 defeat to the 10-man Strand team. Kirk said:
"I was sizing up local talent for our squad. I believe that young Strathfoyle talent should play for teams in Strathfoyle"

Fans will certainly be paying close attention to any dealings in the transfer market, but the title is currently the number one priority.

Exclusive Interview: One on One with Rory Kirk

Ahead of the 'revenge tie' against Bentleys, the Lisahally Listener was fortunate enough to get an exclusive interview with one half of the Lisahally management, Rory Kirk. A tenacious character, Kirk offers an insider view of life on the touchline of one of Derry's finest Sunday League teams.

____________________________

Lisahally Listener: The season thus far has been fairly successful and despite a few minor blips, Lisah' are currently on course for promotion. Are you and Danny confident that your team can maintain its prodigious form?
Rory Kirk: We are confident we can maintain this form and we are aiming for the league title. Promotion will be a bonus but we want to finish first. As long as the team can stay focused we will achieve this.

LL:
Many Lisah' fans have been surprised by the run. What would you say has been the secret (if any) to success?
RK:
A few things. Pride, passion, fitness, respect and belief. Simple things like maintaining the ball and when lost go and get it back. Hound the opponents down and disrupt their play.

LL: Rumour has it that you have borrowed inspiration from Al Pacino's speech in Any Given Sunday. Can you confirm this and if so, why did you use this particular speech?
RK: This speech is a favourite of mine as it is very relevant to any team. I used it as a player when we won the cup two seasons ago and it has stuck with me. It has everything to get you hyped up, in my opinion.

LL: Several Lisah players have recently moved on to newer pastures; semi-pro Paul Lowry has moved to Manchester, Ronan Whoriskey is supposedly "on loan" in Australia and who could forget the transfer saga of Kieran McGlinchey. How have Lisah' been coping and will there be new signings in January?
RK: We are always on the outlook for new players that can add to the team and are willing to bust their balls for the team. We won't sign show ponies. Players moving on is part of the game, but we have a squad this year to cope unlike previous years. No one is irreplacable!

LL: How did the Kieran McGlinchey saga affect the team?
RK: Not in the slightest bit. If a player wants to join another team for free pints and grub, good luck to him. No one player is bigger than the team. This issue is closed for the team now.

LL: Has it been difficult dealing with Lisah's so-called 'big' personalities?
RK: It is hard at times as certain players think they are bigger than the team. This is not the case and whenever any of them step out of line we have a word with them and that sorts it. Discipline is key to the team at the minute. If any player has a problem with it I have a simple solution: Get your boots and find another team. There is no 'i' in team and never will be as long as I am in charge.

LL: You were renowned for your passionate playing style and it seems like you've carried that on into management. Do you think you'll ever make a return to play?
RK: I am in a position now that I have a good squad and team to ensure that I am not required as they are playing my game out on the pitch for me. Before I took up this position I said that more youth had to get the chance, as the team had become stale and happy with 3rd place every season. The youth have grasped this chance and hopefully 'The Monk' will not be required...but I haven't gone away you know!

LL: How well prepared is the team for the revenge tie against Bentley's?
RK: The team will be very focused and the desire will be there to beat Bentleys. I feel when we last played them we all let ourselves down with lack of belief and experience in the second half. This will not be the case this time and we will be barking for 90 mins. We want our 3 points back.

LL: Any final thoughts?
RK: The management would like to thank yourself for the hard work you do promoting, the fantastic local support, the players for sticking with us and giving us a chance and training hard at training, but remember one thing: no one player is bigger than the team and a few at the minute think they are. If we maintain the desire, pride and passion we will win this league with, don't forget, a squad. Keep up the support and we will keep winning. WOOF! WOOF!

Lisahally Triumph over Trojans

Trojans 0-1 Lisahally 26.09.10

The Lisahally players grafted admirably this Sunday in order to ensure that they ran out 1-0 winners against Trojans at the Brandywell. A tremendous header from colossus Barry Murray following a pin-point cross from Peter Doherty was enough to separate the teams. The victory is a massive boost for the Strathfoyle men and it has lifted the whole dressing room, with manager Rory Kirk lavishing praise on his players; a stark contrast to the previous week. He was quite pleased with the result and said,
"The team played with pride and passion and showed the doubters what they are made of. We have to make sure we keep it up now."

Emmett Kirk made a return from Stateside and showed no signs of jet-lag. He quipped that his new boots that helped him in this respect, claiming that they gave him "extra stamina". Nevertheless, the entire team worked hard to win the game and fan-favourite Stevo McAllister was proud of the performance, suggesting that the team showed "the heart that can win us the league". Despite the victory, there was bad news for commanding left-back Aidy O'Kane, who suffered ligament damage following a collision. However, the fans are hopeful Aidy will be back before the end of the season.

Lisahally have a reputation for being perennial title-contenders, forever grasping for promotion to the Premier Division, but it's clear that the team want to rid themselves of this reputation by winning the league and it seems that the belief has been instilled in the team by the management (and of course the vibrant fans).

Return for Stevo?

Following Lisahally's disappointing 1-1 draw at home with Phoenix last Sunday, the team has been at the receiving end of a scathing verbal tirade from the management. Passionate player-manager Rory Kirk has voiced his disappointment at the result, but also expressed concern at the performance, suggesting that "a big improvement is needed in future", if the team wants to maintain its push for promotion. Kirk needed a full day to cool off before he could bring himself to speak on the matter. He said,
"[T]he team has to play as a team. We can't have individuals playing for themselves. Remember, there is no 'i' in 'team'."

Indeed, Ronan Whoriskey, a Lisahally stalwart who is currently enjoying a loan spell in Australia, was shocked at the news and suggested that some players need a wake-up call:
"I would have a few words. Some people want to take it easy for some reason, but not me. A bit of sweat, blood and thunder goes a long way."

Interestingly however, the poor result has led some sections of Lisahally supporters to call for certain players to come out of retirement, in order to galvanise the team. One such player is former Lisahally play-maker, Stevo McAllister. During his playing days, McAllister was widely considered to be one of Lisahally's most creative players and was unquestionably an integral part of the team which recently won the First Division Cup. McAllister was a versatile player, who played in various positions for Lisahally and the threat he posed from set-pieces was almost unrivalled. Since his retirement, the midfield wizard has been a regular spectator at Lisahally games and has always endeavoured to show his support for his second favourite team (the favourite, of course, being Arsenal). When asked about the recent result, McAllister, in typical fashion, was positive. He said,
"We'll be back stronger next week. We need all the 'dogs' [players] barking though!"

However, he remained equivocal when quizzed about a prospective return to Lisahally.
"I don't know at the minute. Obviously I love Lisah' and want to help them in any way I can, so if I was desperately needed then maybe. You might say I'm 'semi-retired'. I have been considering going into management or coaching and I recently had the honour of co-managing The Single Men in their annual game against The Married Men. Add to that the extensive knowledge I have accumulated over years of playing Championship Manager and Football Manager and I think it's fair to say that my CV is impressive. So maybe I could assume a coaching position to help Rory and Danny."

While it remains unclear as to whether or not McAllister will make a return to Lisahally, it's obvious that the Lisahally team needs to focus on the aim of promotion and the management will be hopeful that the players band together as a team to realise this goal.

Mighty Mullan

Last week, Conor Mullan came off the bench to score his first goal of the season for Lisahally in their 4-0 demolition of local rivals, Maydown. This week, it seems that he could be in line to start against title-contenders, Culmore and, while it remains to be seen whether the young man can hold down a starting place, Lisahally fans are glad that the powerful forward is finally getting his chance.

Mullan comes from a family with a strong football tradition; a pedigree of sorts. His uncle, Gerry Mullan, was a fine footballer who made his name in the Irish League playing for Ballymena, Glentoran, Coleraine and he even had a spell (albeit a rather brief one) at English side, Everton. Gerry would go on to win 4 caps for the Northern Ireland national team and he was, at one stage, the most expensive Irish League player. Mullan's cousin, Philip Lowry, is an IFA under-21 international currently playing for IFA Premiership champions, Linfield. However, it his father, Lawrence "Libby" Mullan, who Lisahally fans will be most familiar with. "Libby" is widely considered to be one of the most gifted footballers to have graced the Lisahally shirt. Indeed it is said that the Limavady man was the original poster boy for football in Strathfoyle, combining subtle good-looks with outrageous ability. "Libby" was one of those rare players who had the capacity to slot in and do an effective job in any position and his versatility was, without doubt, a key ingredient to Lisahally's successes in the early '90s.

With this in mind, Conor Mullan has big boots to fill if he is expected to emerge from behind the colossal shadow of his father, but it is a challenge that the 23 year old is relishing. He told the Listener,
"I'm fitter than I've ever been. At the start of the season I was on the fringes and it didn't look like I was going to get into the team, but I went down to the pitch and did extra training hoping to give myself the edge and it's finally paying off. It was a great feeling coming on and scoring against Maydown."

Mullan began his football career as a central defender and he was renowned for his robust tackling and commanding heading. Indeed, it is interesting to note that it was in the centre-half position that Mullan played a vital role in helping the Strathfoyle Youth Club win a Limavady based tournament. However, as time went on, Mullan abandoned his defensive style, instead favouring a more attacking position. Mullan's first club was indeed Lisahally, who were then managed by the legendary Topher Whoriskey and Chris Tracey. Mullan stayed at Lisahally for two seasons and although he played only a minor role in the team, the young man contributed his fair share of goals.

Despite his obvious ability, Mullan found his opportunities for first team football limited and frustration drove him to transfer to Maydown F.C., which unsurprisingly elicited cries of "Judas!" from upset fans. Nevertheless, it was a move which rewarded Mullan with an abundance of first team football, as he became the engine of the Maydown midfield. He spent two fruitless seasons at Maydown before his desire for glory led him to re-sign for his former club. Mullan explained,
"I had a good experience with Maydown, even though we struggled. I learned a lot from it and I got a lot of game time, but I felt that the time was right for me to go back to Lisah'. They won the cup two seasons back and I think I matured enough in my time away to challenge for a place."

It's clear that Mullan's intentions are to consolidate his position in the Lisahally team and to win trophies, but when faced with comparisons to his father, he is nonchalant:
"My da was a good player and he still bangs them in when he joins in at training. We're different players though. My aim this season is to help Lisah' get promoted. It doesn't matter where I'm playing, I'll do my best. Those rumours about me claiming that I'd score a hattrick before the end of the season are false by the way! If I score one every game, I'll be happier. I'll be even happier if I get my shin pads off Mark Duffy!"

This Sunday's top of the table encounter with Culmore is sure to be a stern test for young Conor Mullan and Lisahally fans will be hoping that the powerful forward is on form.

Lisahally v Culmore (12.9.10)
Aidy O'Kane looks set to return to the team, following his ankle injury and there could possibly be a reshuffle in defence. Otherwise, there shouldn't be any drastic changes to the squad which triumped over Maydown.

“ El Classico “ Abandoned Early

A record crowd of 71 people turned up on a beautiful Sunday morning to watch the much anticipated derby match, between Lisahally and Maydown. The strathfoyle men brushed their rivals aside, leading 4 goals to nil before the match ultimately had to be called to an end. Goals from Cathal O kane, Barry Murray, Noel O’ Donnell and Conor Mullan sealed the victory as Lisahally cruise further towards that premier league promotion. The real talking point came around the 70th minute when experienced left back Brian Devine suffered a serious injury to his ankle, which resulted in the match to be called to an end.

Following the disappointment of their first defeat last week to Bentleys, Lisahally were determined to put that behind them and return to their winning ways. There were some changes to the team that lost to The Bentley last week. ‘Hard Hitting’ Decky Brown had to fill in at left back as the inspired Aidy O Kane was ruled out due to an ankle injury. Tenancious midfielder Noel Coyle partnered Noel O Donnell in the centre of the park while young Cathal O Kane happily started for a second week in a row on the left wing. Interestingly enough, defensive lynchpin Kieran McGlinchey sat on the side lines but only as a spectator. A fact that the young centre half is still finding hard to accept . McGlinchey had this to say :

“ There is nothing worse than a man like myself to be sat here on the side of pitch on Sunday morning. This will not happen next week but I can assure you it will not be Lissa I will be playing for. I have got my transfer to Downeys and hopefully I will be starting for them next week. The free pint and bag of mega meanies was too tempting to reject.”

The Maydown team fielded a few Strathfoyle men themselves as towering centre half Brain O Kane partnered former Lisahally man Davey Kennedy in defence, while the versatile Christopher ‘Packy’ Maguire started in the heart of the Maydown midfield.

The Strathfoyle men started the brighter of the two sides as Lisahally almost scored 20 seconds into the game when a cross from young Cathal O Kane picked out Barry Murray in the Maydown penalty area but his shot went inches wide. The first real chance of the game came in the 10th minute when midfield ace Noel O Donnell dropped a pass over the top of the Maydown defence, which hard tackling Emmett Kirk latched onto. The Lisahally forward charged into the box only to be brought down by former Lisahally man Davey Kennedy and the referee had no choice but to award a penalty. Shouts from the Lisahally management ordered captain Noel O Donnell to take the penalty as the reliable Jai White had missed a penalty two weeks before, O Donnell was not interested in what the managers had to say as he went over to the centre half and told him to take the penalty. Jai confidently stepped up as he took the long nervous walk to the other end of the pitch, only for his penalty to ricochet off the post out for a goal kick, much to the disappointment of the Lisahally players and fans alike. Spirits were soon lifted though 10 minutes later as hardworking left back Decky Brown exploited a huge gap in the Maydown defence as he released Cathal O Kane down the left hand side of the pitch. The young left winger could not believe the amount of space he found himself in as he approached the Maydown box, only to be caught in two minds on whether to cross the ball or shoot. A huge shout from the sideline urged the young man to shoot which he had no hesitation to oblige with a low shoot which went through his brother and Maydown centre half Brian Okane legs and found the bottom right corner of the net. Cathal, a former Maydown player himself, was delighted to have scored past the team that never really give him a chance as a youngster and he made sure he celebrated in style. Ten minutes later, the Strathfoyle men added a second as a cross from midfield dynamo Peter Doherty found Emmett Kirk on the left hand side of the Maydown penalty area, who then shifted the ball back across the box to the feet of Barry Murray who struck a weak shot that appeared to be in slow motion but yet somehow trickled over the line. The rest of the first half remained a one sided affair as Lisahally calmly controlled possession with Maydown offering little in response. It was only a matter of time before the Strathfoyle men added the third and it came from some great work down the right hand side of the pitch when self styled role model Mark Duffy made a good run into space and then supplied a pinpoint cross into the box which captain Noel O Donnell coolly finished from close range. The third goal seemed to spark something in the poor Maydown team as they made there first attack on the stroke of half time, as a long range shot from a midfielder had Watty the Lisahally keeper scrambling across his net, only for the shot to bounce of the outside of the post. The first half came to an end along with shouts from loyal Lisahally fan and local legend Ralph Dixon chanting, “Davey, Davey give us a wave!” Referring to former lisahally man Davey Kennedy who had a knightmare first half, much to the delight of the home fans.

The second half started much the same as the first half ended. With the home side producing all the chances only for the impressive Noel O Donnell to fire over the bar from inside the penalty area. Fifteen minutes into the half, the Lisahally bench began to think about resting players as the ever working ‘Iron’ Dan Collins replaced Peter Doherty on the right side of midfield, while powerhouse forward Conor Mullan replaced Emmett Kirk up front. It took just ten minutes for the powerhouse striker to make his mark on the game as the former Maydown man dispossessed one of his best friends, towering centre half Brain O Kane, on the edge of the Maydown box. Mullan produced a fine finish into the bottom corner of the net to make it four nil and ultimately finish the match. The major talking point of the whole match came with just twenty minutes remaining as Brain Devine came on and replaced midfielder Noel ‘Backspin’ Coyle. The experienced left back went into a tough challenge with one of the Maydown strikers only to come off much worst. Devine remained on the ground for five minutes before worry started to spread across the faces of players and fans alike. The whole crowd went onto the pitch to investigate and due to the shocking injury sustained to the Lisahally man, the referee had no choice but to call the match to an end. Lisahally claimed 3 more points and that one step closer to promotion but at what cost, as they may have lost one of their key players for the rest of the season.

After the match, the listener got an interview with young Cathal O Kane who could do nothing but express his delight in beating his former team :

"As I said before the match, I would terroise the Maydown defence and make my brother look a fool. I cant wait until im sitting down at the dinner table today with him, there will be some harsh words spoke but most importantly im happy to not only score but get the result."

Also, Rory Kirk issued an early statement on defender Brian Devines condition :

"Unfortunately, it is not good news for Brian. Early reports show that a bone in his ankle is broken. It is highly unlikely that the left back may play another game this season. We wish him all the best with his recovery."

Although alot of the Lisahally players appeared to be really upset about the injury picked up by one of their key players, they must try their best and put this behind them and go out next week and produce a performance much like today against title contenders Culmore.

Match Preview: Lisahally v Maydown (5.9.10)

Derby day is nearly upon us and the excitement is beginning to show around the Enagh area as Lisahally prepare to face local rivals, Maydown, at the Strathfoyle Arena this Sunday. Lisahally will be trying to put their uninspiring defeat to Bentleys behind them this weekend with a victory over their rivals. Indeed, the big derby will act as a welcome distraction from the painfully drawn-out transfer saga of Kieran McGlinchey, which has dominated headlines over the past week. Nonetheless, fans are likely to be eager to find out whether or not their beloved team can sustain a realistic promotion drive without one of their more valued assets. Maydown, who have suffered defeat in their opening two league games, feature a number of Strathfoyle-based players, including towering centre-back, Brian O'Kane and enterprising utility-player and former Lisahally man, Christopher Maguire.

As deserter Kieran McGlinchey was engaged in crunch talks with his new club on Wednesday evening, Lisahally players were diligently preparing for the big game and it looks likely that there will be a number of changes to the match squad. The talented Aidy O'Kane, who has been a revelation at left-back this season, is nursing an ankle injury and is unavailable for Sunday. Jai White is facing a late fitness test, while Peter Mahon is also struggling with a knee injury, much to the tenacious midfielder's disappointment. Mahon expressed his frustration to the Listener:
"I was poised to make a move to Galway, but opted to stay and play for my local team. It's been an ambition of mine since I was a youngster. I remember going to games and seeing the silky skills and dreamt of one day playing in front of the Beechwood crowd. I picked up this injury on Monday, so I'm sickened."

Decky Brown looks set to fill in at left-back in Aidy O'Kane's absence, while veteran midfielder and fan-favourite, Noel Coyle returns to partner Noel O'Donnell in midfield. Cathal O'Kane, who supplied the crosses for Lisahally's goals last week, retains his place in the team. Cathal has been phenomenal this season and has worked hard to force himself into the managers' plans with some inspirational performances on the left wing. He told the Listener,
"I'm delighted to be in the team. I feel fit and I'm getting my rhythm back, thankfully."

Young Cathal also warned his brother, Brian O'Kane, that he is in for a surprise this Sunday:
"Brian? He's playing for a second-rate side and I'll prove that this Sunday. If he thinks he's going to grab the headlines, he can think again, because I'll be terrorizing their defence."

Interestingly, Wednesday's training session saw "Iron" Dan Collins play particularly well alongside semi-retired Stevo McAllister, which can only bode well for his chances of making the match squad on Sunday. Remarkably, "Iron" Dan hasn't made the Lisahally squad in two weeks, so he was determined to make an impression. The versatile player told the Listener,
"I'm not that disappointed, in all honesty. I think that it's good to have competition for places because it pushes everyone to try that extra bit harder, but hopefully I've done enough to get picked this week"

The general consensus is that player-manager, Rory Kirk was one of the better players at the training. He netted two 'wonder goals', reaffirming that he still has the 'va-va-voom' required to play at this level, but it was Lisahally legend, Lawrence Mullan who stole the show, as he bagged a hattrick. Kirk praised Mullan's natural ability, suggesting that some of Lisahally's players could learn a thing or two from the seasoned goalscorer. Indeed, Lawrence's son, Conor, has big boots to fill, but he hopes to emulate his father and has vowed to score a hattrick before the end of the season.

Probable Lisahally Lineup:
"Watty", Duffy, Jai, Nicholl, Brown, Doherty, Coyle, O'Donnell, C. O'Kane, Kirk, Murray

McGlinchey Signs for Downey's

The Listener may be based in Galway at the time of writing this article, but the news that Kieran McGlinchey has left Lisahally has certainly resonated far and wide. It is understood that the strong defender was deeply hurt by the decision to omit him from the starting lineup in the league game against Bentleys last week. As such, he immediately informed his agent to find him another club. McGlinchey confirmed the transfer earlier today:
"After the Bentleys game, I had to reassess where my future lay. Did I want to be on the sidelines at First Division games, or did I want to be playing at the highest level and partying at the highest level? This move gives me the latter. It's a dream move almost. Talks were initiated on Sunday afternoon, but stalled on Tuesday as Downey's failed to meet my demands [free entry on Sunday nights, plus two bags of Mega Meanies before each match], but they amended their offer accordingly and I happily accepted."

In response to the shock transfer, Lisahally management released a statement, which focused less on the player, but placed emphasis on the word 'team', suggesting that no player is bigger than the club:
The management would like to wish Kieran all the best with his new club and thank him for his service. Lisahally will be playing Maydown at the Strathfoyle Arena on Sunday at 11:30 am. Support your local TEAM. Big crowds are expected so come early. Up Lisah'!

McGlinchey's intentions became crystal clear when he failed to turn up for training on Wednesday evening. After the training session, the Listener caught up with fan favourite, Sean 'Bhoyo' Ferguson, who seemed unfazed. When asked about McGlinchey's future, Ferguson replied,
"That's it. He's gone. Lisah' will go on without him."

Indeed, the nature of McGlinchey's transfer raises many questions. Fans will ask whether or not the management made the right decision in resting McGlinchey, favouring kamikaze Christopher Nicholl instead of risking the talented defender. One Lisahally fan appeared sympathetic with the management, but also disappointed at losing McGlinchey:
"I understand where the managers are coming from. [McGlinchey] didn't finish the game against Strand and he couldn't finish mid-week training, so why would they risk starting a player who might have to come off after ten minutes? That said, players like McGlinchey are rare these days, especially in the First Division. I'm definitely disappointed at the way he has left us."

Other supporters were much more emotional in their reaction, with some angrily branding him a 'Judas'. Such reactions are of course undertstandable, if slightly melodramatic. However, perhaps the most important question, as the Lisahally management have alluded to in their statement, is, can one player be bigger than the team? Indeed, as several pundits have suggested, McGlinchey's shock departure from his local club may be an indication of the increasingly arrogant mind-set of the modern footballer.

The Lisahally Listener would love to hear what the fans think of this transfer, feel free to add your opinion in the comments section.

BREAKING NEWS

Kieran McGlinchey

Lisahally management team, Rory Kirk and Danny Brown, have issued a statement in response to the claims that Kieran McGlinchey was dropped for the game against Bentleys last Sunday:
"The management would like to state that Kieran McGlinchey was not dropped but rested. He came off injured against Strand and could not train the following week at our training session. In the interests of the team he was rested with the view of coming on during the match, which he did."

This statement will no doubt come as a relief to worried fans, but speculation over the dynamic defender's future is still rife. Indeed, a source close to McGlinchey told the Listener,
"Kieran's got a big heart and a strong determination to play every game, so you can understand his disappointment at not starting. I can't say much, but he could very well be seeking a move elsewhere. I'm told the potential move involves free tickets into Sugar on a Sunday night."

At present, there has been nothing official emanating from the McGlinchey camp regarding his future, but Lisahally fans will be hopeful that they can hold on to one of their more promising players.

Lisahally Uninspiring in Defeat

Lisahally 2-4 Bentleys (29.08.10)
Lisahally succumbed to their first defeat of the season at home to Bentleys on Sunday. It was a hard pill to swallow for Lisahally, who had dominated the first half, taking the lead on two occasions, but as the famous saying goes, 'It's a game of two halves' and the second half was one which Lisahally fans and players should try to forget.

There were a number of changes to the Lisahally starting lineup that defeated Strand; notable absentees included defensive lynchpin, Kieran McGlinchey, and injured semi-pro, Paul Lowry. A source close to McGlinchey said:
"Kieran being dropped has sent shockwaves around Strathfoyle. Nevermind Mark Duffy, this man was 'Mr. Consistent' for the past two seasons and was arguably Man-of-the-Match last week against Strand. I don't know how you can justify dropping a player like that. I'd be worried now that he might seek a move elsewhere. I've already heard rumours that Ciaran Dunne is offering him a pint and a packet of Mega Meanies every Sunday to play for Downey's."

Interestingly, self-styled role-model, Mark Duffy, made a return to right back, while popular kamikaze centre back, Christopher Nicholl partnered Jai in the heart of the defence. Super-sub, Cathal O'Kane started on the left-wing and free-scoring Peter Doherty joined Barry Murray in attack. Amazingly, "Iron" Dan Collins once more failed to make the bench, which is a startling indication of Lisahally's new-found strength in depth, something that Dan acknowledges to be "a good headache to have". The Bentleys team included two Strathfoyle men, with Ryan O'Kane playing in the unfamiliar centre-back role and Nathan Strawbridge playing on the left-wing.

The beginning of the game was extremely tentative, with both sides failing to create any clear-cut chances. Indeed, for the first five minutes of the game, the crowd was much more entertained by the shocking state of one Bentleys midfielder, who appeared to be utterly stocious as he staggered gracefully up and down the windswept Beechwood pitch. Such was the hilarity of it that the guy was even heralded as the new 'Poster Boy' for Sunday League football. However, Lisahally soon found a breakthrough after a passage of play, as a cross fell to Peter Doherty, who smashed the ball past the Bentleys goalkeeper. Lisahally had once more found their rhythm and began to create numerous goalscoring opportunities, but Lisahally's almost trademark lack of killer-instinct ensured that these chances were wasted. One attack saw Noel O'Donnell thread through a ball to Peter Doherty, who comically scuffed his shot with his left foot. It seems that Doherty was attempting to silence his critics on the sideline, who had previously derided his ability (or lack thereof) to score with his left foot. It would prove to be a costly miss, as Bentleys scored soon after when the Lisahally defence completely failed to deal with a low corner, allowing former Lisahally youngster, Nathan Strawbridge, to tap in from six yards.

The Strathfoyle Men responded instantly when another pin-point cross from Cathal O'Kane found Barry Murray, who made it 2-1 to Lisahally. It was all smiles at half-time. Lisahally were undoubtedly the better team, yet, oddly, the second half proved to be a disaster of nightmarish proportions as Lisahally conceded three goals without reply. While Lisahally were slow to start in the second half and Bentleys began to look markedly more composed, there was no shortage of chances, with goalscorer Peter Doherty finding many opportunities to score. However, the diminutive forward, who is Lisahally's top goalscorer this season, failed to convert any of the chances, leading the fans to jokingly suggest that he had somehow borrowed Paul Lowry's boots for the second half.

Cultured midfielder, Michael Cooke, replaced tough-tackling Emmett Kirk on the right-wing and the Lisahally management, evidently frustrated by the poor finishing, showed no hesitation when they substituted Peter Doherty for Jason Kam. Indeed, Lisahally's complacency was punished when a mistimed challenge allowed a Bentley's forward through to calmly convert past the Lisahally goalkeeper, making the score 2-2. With twenty minutes to go, Lisahally frantically chased the winner and a long ball over the top from Aidy O'Kane released Jason Kam free on goal. However, the young man's composure was practically non-existent, as he lost his footing and literally took a nose-dive, squandering yet another chance. There were humourous cries of 'Penalty!' from the Lisahally bench and one fan quipped that he was blinded by his dazzling yellow boots, but the laughter soon ceased when Mark Duffy was embarrassingly caught out of position, allowing Nathan Strawbridge to hammer home to make it 3-2 to Bentleys. Following this concession, there was a stark change in attitude from Lisahally, as Bentleys adopted a defensive approach with the aim of shutting out the opposition. Experienced midfielder, Noel Coyle replaced the tired Cathal O'Kane and Decky Brown was replaced by Kieran McGlinchey. Strangely however, McGlinchey was played on the left-wing, as opposed to his more familiar role in defence. As the clock ticked closer to the final whistle, Lisahally changed to 3-4-3 with Noel Coyle dropping into defence and Mark Duffy was sent forward in a desparate bid to salvage a point. The gung-ho mentality encouraged the creation of a number of chances, but Lisahally could not find a way through the determined Bentleys defence and the final nail in the coffin came when Lisahally lost possession in midfield, once more allowing the Bentleys forward through on goal. The Lisahally goalkeeper valiantly saved the initial shot, but was unluckily beaten by the second and the game finished 4-2 to Bentleys.

After the game, former player Stevo McAllister was vociferous in his criticism of the performance. He told the Listener,
"I predicted that Lisah' would triumph easily by two goals, but it wasn't to be. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Hospital passes, reckless challenges, poor finishing and mis-timed headers. The second half was terrible. I hope Rory and Danny can sort this out. Hopefully it's just a blip."
The major criticism, it seems, is what "Iron" Dan Collins previously described as the 'erratic' selection policy of the management. This was perhaps most obviously manifested in the decision to drop Kieran McGlinchey, but there were also questions raised over the motive behind the timing and manner of the substitutions, which caused upheaval to the midfield. Nevertheless, what is certain, is that this loss provides an even bigger incentive to triumph against local rivals Maydown next week. Indeed, if Lisahally are to bounce back with a win and maintain their promotion drive, there will need to be a drastic improvement.

Match Preview: Lisahally v Bentleys (29.08.10)

This weekend's fixture sees Lisahally take on new-comers Bentleys at the Strathfoyle Arena. The Strathfoyle Men are determined to extend their winning streak, which would keep their hopes of promotion alive, but they may find it to be a difficult task against Marty Strawbridge's outfit. In their two games to date, Bentleys have suffered defeat against Culmore, but defeated Maydown easily. However, this fixture will be their first real task, as perennial title-contenders Lisahally are a side very much in form.

Lisahally management will face a selection headache before Sunday, as several players remain doubts with injuries. Key players such as Emmett Kirk and Peter Doherty sat out training yesterday evening while new signing, Aidy O'Kane and defensive lynchpin, Kieran McGlinchey picked up a knocks. There was some good news however, with the return of veteran centre-back Shaun Whoriskey, who took part in training. Midfield playmaker, Michael Cooke, and tenacious midfielder Peter "Mayhem" Mahon also took part in the rigorous session. Interestingly, Lawrence Mullan, a former Lisahally legend, also joined in, fuelling rumours that he may be assuming a coaching role at the club. Fallen star, Mark Duffy, who has recently been relegated to the bench, was one player who desperately needed to make an impression on his coaches and indeed his teammates and it seems he did so. Rory Kirk has expressed his appreciation of Duffy's commitment:
"Mark came in and gave 100%. He played well enough in the training game and I'm glad that he's taken heed of our advice. He's a true professional that lad."

Duffy claims to have reformed and said,
"They told me they wanted to teach me a lesson and I can tell you it's 'Lesson Learned' for Big Duffs. I gave my all in training and there'll be no partying before games now."

When asked about his chances of reclaiming his starting position, Duffy told the Listener,
"There's no better man. You watch me on Sunday, I'll grab the headlines again, because 'The Prodigal Son' will have returned!"

From 'Superstar' to 'Sub-erstar'

Last season he was phenomenal. He could do no wrong. The young man was widely considered to have the potential to be the 'Next Big Thing' to hit Lisahally since 'Crying' Dick Tracey. However, fast-forward just one season and shockingly, it seems that Mark Duffy's star is on the wane.

The versatile full-back has found himself on the fringes at Lisahally this season and, to his disappointment, he is fast becoming acquainted with the substitute bench. When asked about his situation, Duffy said,
"What can I say? The man's not happy. I mean, let's admit the facts here, Mark Duffy can't be on the bench."
In the final game of pre-season, Duffy was substituted early on leading fans to believe that the defender had been injured. Their fears were allayed however when Duffy started the opening game of the season against Beechtree, but once more, Duffy was taken off ten minutes before half-time. In the following game, Duffy was relegated to the bench, a reality which he is struggling to accept. Duffy told the Listener,
"What more do the managers expect from the big man? More to the point youngfellow, I'll be sitting down with my agent [Alan Duffy] to assess the situation and if I'm not in the managers' plans, then obviously I'm going to have to consider other options that are available to me."

In response to the ongoing media speculation over the Duffy's future, Lisahally's management team of Rory Kirk and Danny Brown today issued a brief statement clarifying the club's position on the matter:
We, the managers at Lisahally Football Club, would like to unequivocally state that Mark Duffy remains a part of our plans; as such we would kindly discourage speculation over the player's immediate future. However, recent developments concerning the discipline of the player with regard to his social life have left the club with no other option but to impose stringent disciplinary measures, with the aim of discouraging a repeat of such behaviour. The club simply can not and will not have players turning up for training and matches in "a bad way". We sincerely hope that Mark Duffy will benefit from this action and strive to improve his behaviour and his performances in future.
It remains to be seen what will become of Duffy's future, but Lisahally fans are hopeful that the whole affair will be resolved sooner, rather than later.

Lucky Lisahally Edge Victory

Strand United 1-2 Lisahally (22.08.10)

Lisahally continued their campaign for promotion on Sunday morning with a hard-fought victory over Strand United at Lisnagelvin. Splendid goals from striker Barry Murray and diminutive midfield dynamo, Peter Doherty overturned the early 1-0 deficit to complete the comeback and seal victory for the Strathfoyle men.

Fresh off their momentous 6-0 opening day victory over Beechtree, Lisahally were keen to maintain their push for promotion with a win over Strand. There were several changes made to the team which triumphed so easily over Beechtree, with versatile defender, Kieran McGlinchey moved to centre-back and speed-demon Paul Lowry starting on the right-wing. Decky Brown partnered Noel O'Donnell in midfield, while Emmett Kirk joined Barry Murray in attack. However, the real talking-point was undoubtedly the controversial decision to start with talisman and self-styled superstar, Mark Duffy, on the bench.

Strand started the game the livelier of the two sides, playing some attractive football and exploiting the gaps in Lisahally's untried midfield. Lisahally's midfield were evidently frustrated by Strand, as Noel O'Donnell uncharacteristically lost possession and Decky Brown committed a number of reckless fouls in dangerous positions. Indeed, this would prove to be their undoing, as a poorly timed tackle from Decky Brown gifted the opposition a freekick outside the box. A quick pass into the box landed perfectly at a Strand player's feet, who wasted no time in smashing the ball past the Lisahally goalkeeper.

Lisahally's sense of urgency was quickly heightened and Paul Lowry moved into the more familiar forward position, with Kirk assuming the right wing role. Strand instantly felt the impact of Lowry's lightning pace, as he raced clear of the last man, only to prematurely blast his shot straight at the Strand goalkeeper. As the Strand management breathed a sigh of relief, Lisahally fans and coaches alike were furious and berated their team. However, the equaliser came minutes before half-time, when Barry Murray charged after a loose ball and catching the Strand goalkeeper off his line, found the net with a fantastic placed shot.

In what seemed to be a stark indication of intent, Lisahally made two changes at half-time, with Mark Duffy introduced at right-back and Lisahally's exotic new signing, Jé Roberto, replacing Decky Brown. Lisahally appeared to be much more assured in possession and disciplined in defence in the second half, but they struggled to make any clear-cut chances, such was the determination of Strand's defence. Aidy O'Kane created a number of chances when he surged down the left wing, but the majority of Barry Murrary's shots were blocked by the heroic defending of Strand. In a scramble in the box following a Peter Doherty cross, Paul Lowry found himself in acres of space, but the striker blazed the ball over the bar. Lowry was then substituted for Cathal O'Kane, who slotted in at left-wing, while Peter Doherty assumed the forward position.

Cathal O'Kane proved to be an inspired substitution yet again, as he linked up with Aidy O'Kane and threaded a marvelous through-ball to Peter Doherty, who skilfully rounded the goalkeeper before drilling the ball into the net to make it 2-1 to Lisahally. However, following the goal, the Strathfoyle men adopted a defensive mentality and played quite deep, encouraging the Strand attack to commit men forward, which caused considerable distress for the Lisahally defence, who, by sheer luck avoided conceding. Defensive lynchpin, Kieran McGlinchey, was taken off towards the end of the game as a precaution and Noel O'Donnell filled in admirably at centre-back for the final five minutes of the game as Lisahally fought to hold on to their lead.

Lisahally Off To A Flyer

Lisahally 6-0 Beechtree (15.08.10)

The reign of Brown and Kirk was officially underway as Lisahally opened the new D&D season at the wonderful Strathfoyle Arena on a fine August morning with an impressive 6-0 victory over the recently relegated Beechtree. Goals from Noel O’Donnell, Emmett Kirk, Cathal O’Kane and Paul Lowry condemned Beechtree to an utterly embarrassing rout, raising questions as to the former Premier Division side’s capacity for a promotion drive.

Lisahally made an immediate impact on the game, flooding men forward in numerous attacks on the Beechtree goal and their positive attitude was soon rewarded, when Paul Lowry was fouled in the box, winning a penalty. However, seasoned utility player, Jai White, was unable to convert the penalty. Nevertheless, it was not long before Lisahally took the lead, with a tremendous strike from Noel O’Donnell. Beechtree failed to respond and Lisahally continued their relentless assault on goal, with former Letterkenny Rovers and Institute maestro, Paul Lowry creating numerous chances for himself, only to shamefully squander them. Naturally, the vibrant Lisahally supporters teased the little man, but they quickly forgave him, attributing his utterly reckless finishing to the fact that he was carrying a slight knock.

A frantic scramble in the Beechtree box following a corner saw Emmett Kirk find the net for the second, just before Lisahally maverick, and self-professed role-model Mark Duffy, hobbled off with a mysterious leg injury (in all probability sustained the night before). He was replaced by "Iron" Dan Collins, who had previously voiced his disapproval over what he termed the “awfully erratic selection policy” of the new management after being overlooked for the final pre-season game, saying that it was "a disgrace", complaining that he "didn't even receive a text". Noel O’Donnell’s terrifically placed shot finished a delightful Lisahally move for the third and striker Paul Lowry eventually found the net to make it 4-0 before the half-time interval.

New Lisahally management duo, Danny Brown and Rory Kirk were, as one might expect, pleased with the scoreline, but were keen to stress the importance of staying focused for the remainder of the game, asserting "We want you to play as if we're 1-0 down!". Indeed, Lisah' started the second half equally as positively, creating numerous chances, including several 'one-on-ones', but their alarmingly diabolical finishing left players and fans increasingly frustrated. On one occasion, substitute Dan Collins, to the sheer astonishment of fans, beat the offside-trap. Unfortunately his shot was hammered directly at the thankful goalkeeper. Winger Kyle Barr, who has recently returned to action following a rather lengthy sabbatical, was also subject to criticism for missing an open net.

Noting the distinct lack of guile in the Lisahally attack, the managers made some substitutions, with Cathal O'Kane entering the fray late into the second half. It proved to be an inspired substitution, as the enterprising left-footed player immediately added a goal, beating the Beechtree 'keeper from a considerable distance with an outrageous lob. Emmett Kirk grabbed his second of the game and made it six for Lisahally when he latched on to a poor kickout from the Beechtree goalkeeper, volleying the ball powerfully into the back of the net.
